The High School Goal The goal of each student, teacher, administrator and parent should be a high school diploma for each and every child. A high school diploma does not guarantee success but it does provide a better opportunity to reach success. A high school diploma that has a solid academic element and a real world connection is a major component in building a successful life.

The Goal has Requirements Students in Bradley County are required to have 28 credits for graduation. These credits encompass the core subjects of English, Math, Science and Social Studies. There are also requirements for World Languages, Fine Arts, Wellness, Personal Finance, an Elective Focus and Electives. Students have 32 opportunities to obtain the required 28 credits through the scheduling system we use.

Block Schedule  Four Types of Classes  A. 90 minutes per day for one semester =1 full credit  B. 45 minutes per day for 2 semesters  C. 45 minutes per day for one semester = ½ credit  D. 90 minutes per day for nine weeks = ½ credit  At the end of each semester a student has the opportunity to complete 4 credits

Electives  Electives constitute those courses which are beyond the scope of the 22 state requirements.  These courses are student/parent/counselor chosen and can be classes of interest to the student or career driven choices.  The State Board of Education’s “High School Policy” requires that all students complete an approved academic elective focus (three credits). The elective focus may be the completion of a CTE program of study or an academic elective focus.  CTE Program of Study - Students completing a CTE elective focus must complete three units in the same CTE program area (ie: Criminal Justice I, II, and III).  Academic Elective Focus – Students completing an academic elective focus must complete three additional academic courses, in the same concentration, above the State requirement.

Elective Focus  For math and science, three additional math and/or science courses (electives) are required in addition to the four math and three science required courses.  For a humanities focus, any combination of courses in English/Language Arts, Foreign Language and Social Studies above the core requirements will satisfy the humanities focus area. Fine arts require any three courses above the core requirements.  For an AP or Dual Enrollment focus, students must complete three AP/Dual Enrollment courses in any combination.
