7 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS There are two types of diplomas you can earn:  Standard Diploma  Advanced Studies Diploma

10 DIPLOMAS – REVIEW STANDARD DIPLOMA 22 credits and 6 SOL’s Core subjects = 3 required in each subject No specific foreign language requirement 2 credits in fine arts, CTE, or foreign language ADVANCED STUDIES 26 credits and 9 SOL’s Core subjects = 4 required in each subject Foreign language requirement: 3 year of one language: or 2 years of 2 different languages 1 credit in fine arts or CTE

12 EVERY FRESHMAN WILL TAKE: 1.English 9:Honors or Academic 2.World History:Pre-AP/Honors or Academic 3.Science:Reseach/Honors or Academic 4.Math:Next class in sequence 5.Health & Physical Education 9 6.Elective:Usually a foreign language 7.Elective:Your choice

13 THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HONORS AND ACADEMIC Academic Honors Freshmen tell us that: Academic classes have about 1.5 hours of homework/studying per week Honors classes have about 2.5 to 3.5 hours of homework/studying per week

15 FRESHMAN SCIENCE Earth Science – ninth grade science  Research/Honors  Academic Biology – tenth grade science  Research/Honors

16 FRESHMAN SCIENCE Earth Science Honors vs. Biology Honors  Biology is a tenth grade course. A small percentage of freshmen opt to take this course.  Honors Biology has a research component which is covered in Earth Science Honors  Students who “skip” the freshman Earth Science will miss important science content  Skipping Earth Science is not recommended by LCPS or BWHS for any student  AOS students receive Earth Science instruction and take the Earth Science SOL  Students need three different sciences for the Advanced Studies

19 VIRTUAL LOUDOUN (VL) CLASSES Online classes provided by Loudoun County Public Schools These are the ONLY online credits we accept Offered three times/year: Summer, Fall, Spring Students take VL for a variety of reasons:  To take less classes during the school day  To “catch-up” or “get ahead”  Due to an illness/they can’t attend school  To make room for another class

21 CLASSES FOR NEXT YEAR Today you will see which core classes your current teacher’s recommended you for You will select two periods of electives Your parents will have access to your requests and can make changes The deadline to make changes is June 10 th

23 LOG INTO STUDENTVUE 1.Go to the Eagle Ridge website 2.Follow the link for ParentVUE 3.Click on the access link: https://portal.lcps.orghttps://portal.lcps.org 4.Click “accept” 5.Follow the link for “I am a student” 6.Enter your school User Name (school ID) and Password (the one you use at school) 7.Click on Course Request on the menu 8.You will see your core courses and HPE9 9.To add electives, click on “Click here to change course requests” 10.Use the “Search Courses” function to look for the electives

24 SELECTING YOUR ELECTIVES You will select two periods of electives  You can pick two year-long electives  You can pick one year-long elective, and two semester (half-year) electives  You can pick four semester (half-year) electives One elective is usually a foreign language for most students! All students must pick at least one alternate elective – or we will pick one for you!!!

28 STARTING DATES FOR FALL ACTIVITIES: Marching Band begins on August 1, 2016 Fall sports begin on August 1, 2016 There will be a parent sports meeting later this year Music teachers will come to Eagle Ridge for auditions this spring.
