WELCOME LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Today we will do the following: 1.Whos your daddy (PAPA)? Review 2.Identifying PAPA in film 3.Short story information! He hates bats.

What is ARGUMENT? This is where we get into the authors main message/argument. The author has a specific opinion or bias about the purpose of the piece of literature. This is the argument.

Which is the ARGUMENT? The author wants to show the effects of mass media on society. OR The author wants to show that mass media will corrupt the minds of the individuals in our society through subliminal messaging.

I, Robot Identify the different parts of PAPA for the I, Robot trailer: U

#1: What are short stories? Prose fiction that can be read in a single sitting. Contains all the elements of a complete novel: plotline, theme, setting, characters, conflicts, and voice (1 st person, 2 nd person, 3 rd person, etc.). Very often has an open beginning (en medias res) and abrupt ending.

#2: En Medias Res (in the middle of) This is when a story starts in the middle of the action or plotline, not at the exposition (beginning of the story). For example: Forrest Gump doesnt start at his birth. It starts in the middle of the action with him telling stories.

#3: Conflicts!!! We all have conflicts, but they are typically organized into three different types: 1. Man vs. Man: this is when a character faces off against another character (Batman vs. Joker). 2. Man vs. Self: this is when a character has some sort of inner turmoil or sickness and battles with himself or herself (Batman vs. fear of bats). 3. Man vs. Nature: this is when a character battles with something thats not human and usually from nature (Batman vs. the weather).

#4: Hemingways Iceberg Theory Only 1/8 th of the story is shown in the text, the other 7/8 th s are inferred by the reader through analysis. Hemingway thought that simplicity in writing bred complexity and wisdom.

#5: Plotline Plotline: dramatic structure or storyline of a piece of literature. Exposition: beginning of the story- introduces setting, characters, and plot. Rising Action: conflicts arise as story progresses. Climax: turning point of play and highest point of action. Falling Action: conflicts begin to resolve and action settles. Denouement/Resolution: conflicts resolve and things return to normalcy

The 6 word short story As legend has it, Hemingway was challenged to write a complete short story in only 6 words. For sale: baby shoes, never used. Is this a complete short story?

For sale: baby shoes, never used. Characters: Mother and Father Conflicts: Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Self (mother vs. miscarriage), (mother vs. depression) Setting: Newspaper office, mothers home Quick Plot: Mother and father sit amongst already purchased materials for their possible child. They sort out the items to be sold or passed on to other friends and family. The story ends with the mother writing- For sale: baby shoes, never used- on a small sheet of paper and places it in between the shoes.

HOMEWORK! Create your own 6 word short story, plotline the action in it, and identify the characters, setting, and conflicts. Bring independent reading books!
