LESSON 5

STUDENTS WILL LEARN…  About South-East Asian City Model  African City Model  *Most of these slides are straight-up taken from: <---go there for a great slide show to study the concepts

THE AFRICAN CITY  African cities often have 3 CBDs=Colonial, Traditional and Periodic Market Zone  Market is also known as “bazzar” sells anything from rugs to vegetables  Difficult to get taxes  Sub-Saharan Africa is the least urbanized area of the world, but the most rapidly urbanizing  Lack transportation de Blij model

THE AFRICAN CITY  No large cities to match Cairo-Kinshasa, Nairobi, Harare, Dakar, Abidjan were established by Europeans  South African cities- Johannesburg, Cape Town & Durbin are western cities with elements of European and American models-high rise CBDs and sprawling suburbs

THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN CITY  SE Asia-rapid growth of population & cities % urban, 1990s-29% urban  Most growth in coastal cities like Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)  Old colonial port zone surrounds the commercial district  Unlike Western cities-no formal business zone, but separate clusters McGee model

THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN CITY  Some of the most prosperous cities and have developed significantly in last 40 years.  Have zones specifically for Western companies to locate, typically ultramodern  Known as “office parks” which have high speed internet and agglomeration  Ports are typically entrepots, meaning they re-export goods that enter McGee model

THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN CITY

MEGA CITIES No “Firm” definition, but typically cities over 10 million Most common in Asia Largely unplanned Leads to on-going environmental issues Sanitation issues Pollution issues
