Europes and Eurdowns  As Trade in Europe Grew, Italy improved their Business Practices and turned profits  Italy increased Asian Trade for Profit and Blocked Europe out of the Mediterranean Sea  As Europe tried to open the Asian Markets, Exploration increased World Wide

Around the World  With the invention of the Caravel, sea travel became easier  Explorers Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco de Gama Find route around Africa to India  As Portugal takes control of the Spice Trade in Asia, the rest of Europe searches for more routes

Columbus Day  Christopher Columbus sets out to find a westward water route to Asia  Columbus miscalculated how far Asia reached around the world and the size of the world and thought he had a short trip  When the king of Portugal would not fund Columbus’ voyage Spain financed the trip

Second Thoughts  King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella funded Columbus for profit and to Spread Christianity  Spain Had doubts about the Journey including:  Accuracy of Columbus’ route calculations  Spain was at war with Muslims  Columbus had a high price for his services

3 Hour Tour?  Columbus wanted big rewards for his exploration including money and leadership  After Defeating the Muslims, Spain financed Columbus and he set sail using the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria  Columbus set sail with an experienced crew and one year of supplies

Wrong Turn  Columbus set sail on August 3 rd 1492 and kept journals of his journey  As the crew lost confidence in the voyage land was sighted on October 22 nd, 1492  Thinking he reached the Indies in Southeast Asia, Columbus called the Taino people Indians  Columbus, however, Had discovered the Caribbean Islands

Round Trip  Columbus Declared the discovered land San Salvador and set out to find Japan, reaching several Caribbean Islands  When Columbus found gold and pearls in Hispaniola, he left his men to rule the land and set sail home  As the Crew angered the Taino people, they would be killed  Columbus gave his report of his route to Asia, not understanding he had discovered a new Continent

Free for all  Columbus failed to bring back riches from the new land and did NOT spread Christianity  After his death, Europeans realized he had discovered a new continent and wanted to get rich  As Spain grew rich in the new land England and France would begin to explore the land
