1 Christopher Columbus Italian navigator Columbus looked for a west route to India He knew the world was round He estimated that one could sail west and reach India faster Many people felt his idea of sailing west was strange Columbus turns to Spain to sponsor his exploration

2 Columbus First Voyage Left Spain in August 1492 with 90 men & 3 caravels After 10 weeks at sea, his crew becomes restless On October 12 th, Columbus finds land He thought the land was India He landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea Sails to Hispaniola and sets a settlement

3 Treaty of Tordesillas Ferdinand & Isabella wanted to make sure their claims stayed with Spain 1497 Spain & Portugal signs the Treaty of Tordesillas Drew an imaginary line from north to south around the world Spain claims land west of the line

4 Spain Looks for More Voyages Ferdinand & Isabella sent Columbus on 3 more journeys west to find India Columbus never found Asia but did find other islands Spain looses patience with Columbus Columbus dies in 1506

5 Goal is to Circumnavigate the Globe Spain sponsors a Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan in 1519 Magellan sailed for months around the tip of South America He arrived in the Philippine Islands Magellan is killed in the Philippines in a local war Juan Sebastian del Cano leads the rest of the crew to continue the journey Arrive back in Spain after 3 years
