4  Motivations for exploring the seas:  Life expectancy is up!  Demand for goods in Europe is high!  People begin looking for riches! MOTIVATIONS

5  The most valued non-monetary items were…SPICES!  Used to:  Preserve food  Make Medicine  Flavor Meat  Make Luxury items like perfume SPICES

6  Arab and Italian traders controlled the market because of their position.  Other Europeans want to find a more direct route to Asia. CONTROL

7  Portugal becomes the first Western European country to try and break into the trade market.  First stop for them…Africa! PORTUGAL AS LEADER

9  The Portuguese mapped Africa in an attempt to find a faster Water route to Asia.  The Southern tip of Africa became called The Cape of Good Hope. MAPPING AFRICA

10  Vasco De Gama – Lead 4 ships around the Cape of Good Hope to India to find spices.  On the trip back, more than half died of Thirst, Hunger, and Scurvy! (A disease resulting from not enough vitamin C)  However, the spices sold for TONS of money (Schmoney? No…money ) PORTUGUESE EXPLORERS

11  After De Gama’s voyage, the Portuguese made a trading post EMPIRE around the Cape of Good Hope. PORTUGAL

12  Christopher Columbus sails for Spain –  Spain’s king and queen, Ferdinand and Isabella, sponsored Christopher Columbus (an Italian) to find a new route to India.  Columbus sailed west, hoping to go around the world and to run into India on the other side.  3 Ships:  Nina  Pinta  Santa Maria SPAIN

13  After 3 months, Columbus landed in the Caribbean Islands in August of 1492.  He called the people he met Indians, because he actually thought he was in India. COLUMBUS

14  Spain and Portugal were rivals. They make a treaty about who should “own” and “control” the newfound territories. The Treaty was called the Treaty of Tordesillas.  The treaty created a “Line of Demarcation.” This line divided the world in half.  Portugal gets the right (India).  Spain gets the left (“new world”)  TREATY OF TORDESILLAS

15  Amerigo Vespucci (Italian) –  Mapped most of the land in the new continents.  He named these new areas…The Americas. MORE

16  Ferdinand Magellan – First person to circumnavigate the world.  Circumnavigate – Sail around the world. MAGELLAN

17  Portugal would take control of most of the continent of Africa, looking for things like:  Gold  Ivory  Slaves… AFRICA
