/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt 1.Library cooperation in Spain 2.CBUC activities 3.Digital Library Summary

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Biblioteca Digital de Catalunya Licensed e-resources / e- journals e- books 37 databases –25% coming from administration Toll access Formula to share costs CBUC’s own resources Institutional repositories: –Theses: , 20 univs. –Research documents: , 17 institutions –OA journals: 200 –Images: TOC database 28 Catalan databases Open Access

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt More OA fans needed More information in the IR More branding for each institution Harmony between local IR and collective IR Preservation Financial sustainability Institutional Repositories’ Challenges

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Federated search tool MetaLib (and SFX) from ExLibris Implementation started in 2006 Now all running (most of them, less than 1 year old) 11 libraries: shared consortial resources (managed centrally) + additional local resources (managed locally) Starting to include repositories and open access documents Still short perspective to evaluate (but good feedback from users and librarians)

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Licensing at BDC

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Participation in BDC licenses

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt New BDC licenses, started in 2008 For all CBUC members –American Society for Microbiology –Nature –Oxford University Press –Royal Society of Chemistry –Taylor & Francis > new e-journals For some CBUC members –Cell Press (4 libraries) –Project MUSE (6) –Science (7) –SIAM (6) –Nature Pub. Group (9) > 400 new e-journals

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Big questions for 2009 Is there (still) room for new (reasonable) consortial deals? –e-journals: maybe CUP and a few more... And money (both at a university level and at a consortium level)? –Universities are supporting 80% of the costs, and some libraries invest almost all of their budget in consortial deals –CBUC is funding nearly 10% of the total cost of BDC e- journals (7M€ approx.) –No new incomes on the horizon

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt New deals for 2009? Some central money available But must be invested in one-time- payments (not new annual subscriptions) Working on proposals: –e-books? –backfiles?

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt 1.Library cooperation in Spain 2.CBUC activities 3.Digital Library Things we learned from our digital library usage data: Summary

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt BDC’s 10th anniversary! First negotiations started in 1998: Academic Press, Mathscinet, Econlit, Medline, ERIC, Aranzadi Now it’s a good time for evaluation (and for promoting access when needed) Some partial reports in the last years Now we have 2 recent ones, and more complete: –A thesis –A report (under construction)

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Doctoral thesis about BDC “La cooperació bibliotecària en l’era digital: consorcis i adquisicions de revistes a les biblioteques universitàries catalanes” by Dr. Miquel Térmens i Graells (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Biblioteconomia i Documentació, ) Available at

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Main conclusion Usage level differences among universities is not related/balanced with their size, but with the following issues: –Historical level of the collections available in their libraries –Research level at each university

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Report (under construction) Description of usage trends at BDC Study objects: e-journals + databases + e-books Data sources: usage statistics from publishers Commissioned to a faculty member from Universitat de Barcelona School of Librarianship (Àngel Borrego) Useful to evaluate and to decide renewals Analysis under construction, but first conclusions available now (full analysis in the next months)

/32 D2/SELL/08 SELL Spain2008.ppt Some conclusions (by now) Full text is prefered –E-journals usage increases –Databases usage not that much (or even descend) “New” deals have impact on the usage of the “old” ones (Again) Usage levels are not related to size
