Year 3 Curriculum Meeting Miss Gilliland and Mrs Carson

School Uniform Full school uniform is required at all times. Trainers must be worn for P.E and black school shoes at all other times. All parts of uniform should be clearly labelled with child’s name and class (including tie). White polo shirts and maroon shorts and/or tracksuit bottoms. * Please arrive to school in full uniform and change in class*

Absences & Appointments  Please try to keep appointments outside teaching hours, where possible.  If possible, please supply a written note.  Alternatively, phone the secretary or tell the class teacher in person.

Other Information Children are allowed bottled water in class. Please ensure that these have a sports top. The car park for parents is at the back of the school. We would be grateful if the front car park was not used. Please label all monies in an envelope with child’s name and what it is for. All dinner money for the week should be given on a Monday morning.

Homework  Reading and written homework every night apart from a Friday.  Spellings nightly for Friday test.  All homework must be signed.

Communication  Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening Reading  Guided/Independent Reading-Same system as previous year-Prepared text from school sent home the following week. In addition, pupils will receive an extension reader on a Wednesday night which they choose themselves. (Level-one below)  Reading groups will begin next week based around Year 2-may be subject to change  Shared Reading-Big books related to current topic Linguistic Phonics  Children will follow a structured programme in class-a different activity each morning  Weekly spellings from the programme-pupils will investigate the words in the list as part of their class-work for a spelling test on Friday.  Revision of the week’s sound will take place daily for 10 minutes each morning from 8.50 – 9.00 am.

Communication Writing  Children will produce: Shared Writing and Independent Writing.  They will also practice letter formation and handwriting skills.  Introduction of written comprehension questions-focus on writing a full sentence. Talking and Listening  Classroom Discussions  Questions and Answers  Pupils own experiences  Topic Work  Show and tell

Mathematics and Numeracy  The Northern Ireland Curriculum consists of five attainment targets; Number  Recognition to  Recognition of coins to £2 and ability to give change within £1  Addition and subtraction within 100 through the introduction of place value.  Introduction of fractions – half and quarter.  Language of number.

Mathematics and Numeracy Shape and Space  Recognition of basic 2D and 3D shapes.  Introduction to more complex shapes. Handling Data  Sorting everyday objects. Recording data using block graphs, Venn and Carroll diagrams. Measures  Introduction of litre and kilogram.  Time: quarter past and quarter to. Processes  Problem-solving, selecting and using maths strategies appropriate to the task.

The World Around Us  Topics covered this year are;  Animals & Habitats  Fruit and Vegetables  Space  Scotland  Dinosaurs  We would appreciate anyone with any expertise or contacts relating to any of the topics to come forward to the class teacher.

First Confession  First Confession will take place on Wednesday 2nd 11am.  Parish Centred.  Parents can help children learn their prayers as part of their Alive – O homework and work from the ‘ Making things Right ‘ programme (Monday night homework)

Enrolment Enrolment for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Communion will take place in Good Shepherd Church on; Wednesday 7th 11am This is a short ceremony to mark the beginning of the children’s preparation of the sacrament of confession. All parents are invited. Baptismal candles must be brought to the ceremony.

Special Educational Needs  Class teacher will inform parents/parents will inform teacher.  Teacher will inform SENCO (Miss Mullan) who will place the child’s name on the SEN Register and may meet parents.  Parental permission will be sought if referral to Educational Psychologist is necessary.

Parental Guidelines  Spend no more than 10 minutes of quality time discussing work – don’t expect the children to be able to do the work totally on their own – we don’t!  Encourage co-ordination skills on an on-going basis: colouring in (pencils/crayons), correct pencil grip, cutting out, sticking and model making.  Encourage respect for books and presentation of work – remember finishing touches such as colouring pictures.
