High % of chronic malnutrition -Slow reduction of malnutrition -Still a high percentage of chronic malnutrition (stunted growth) 14.5% at national level. -Only 1% acute malnutrition, indicating that the main problem is not a complete lack of food (famine) but rather low quality of diet and poor living conditions. Strategic Sectoral Plan PRIORITY ACTION Family agriculture and supply system for food security To support greater food production and productivity of rural families in poverty, as well as the infrastructure for food storage, creating early warning mechanisms for ensuring the permanent availability of food. Strengthening family agriculture and increasing production of basic grains, through technical assistance and the facilitation of access to inputs by producers in conditions of vulnerability.

Food Security Program Goal: Contribute to elevating the availability of and access to basic foods by the population of El Salvador, to improve their quality of life. Pupose: Increase the availability and variety of foods, and promote greater accessibility to food. Result An increase in the permanent supply of foods, in quantity and quality An improvement in access to sustainable consumption of basic foods. Establishment of a contingency program for food security and storage in case of emergency.

Defines national policy and strategy for Food and Nutritional Security Coordination and articulation of national plans and inter-sectoral programs. Mission: responds to the food and nutrition problems of El Salvador. NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY

Presided by the Secretariat for Social Inclusion. Members: Technical Secretariat of the Presidency, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance. Technical bureau extended to other institutions such as the Ministry of Education, Consumer Protection, among others. NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY

Tackles the root causes of food and nutritional insecurity of the population. Consider all areas of activity of economic and social development. Develops policies, programs and national plans with a comprehensive approach. Includes inter-sectoral and cross- disciplinary participation with multiple actors.

NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL SECURITY Recognizes access to food as a basic right. The State is obligated to monitor the compliance of this right. Undertakes actions to guarantee adequate food for the population. Overcome institutional and national obstacles which affect the fulfillment of this right.

Special Food Security Program,–PESA El Salvador Overall Objective To reduce the proportion of rural homes experiencing food and nutritional insecurity by implementing agricultural and human development initiatives to guarantee the availability, stability, access, consumption of food, based on strategic local development alliances in four municipalities in the East of El Salvador. Specific Objective Improved food and nutritional security of the most vulnerable groups in four municipalities. Components: Capacity building in food production and income generation Training in Food Security, Nutrition and Home Communication for Development Institutional Strengthening and Impact
