SOSC 125 NICOLE CATES CAREER GOAL SETTING

Setting Goals for Beginners Set a plan and work it. Make sure they are meaningful and motivating. Your goal should be specific. Your goal should be Measurable. Your goal should be achievable. Your goal should be results-focused Your goal should be time-bound acheiving-goals.html

Set a Plan and Work With It. When you set a plan I believe that you should stick with that plan as much as possible. Changing the plan could be negative for you. Unless, of course, you have to change it because the primary goal set was unrealistic or etc. Also when you set a plan, you have to work it. I believe this means you have to actually work towards your goal. You just can’t expect the goal to come “slap you in the face”. You actually have to try for it. newbies.com/stting-and-acheiving- goals.html

Make Sure they are Meaningful and Motivating. The website states that “Many newbies make the mistake of thinking that performance goals are the duty of the manager. This is not true”. When you are first hired on at a job the manager doesn’t know your capabilities so it is important for you, as the employee, set your own goals because who knows you better than yourself? The goals must be motivating too. My goals that I set are things that I want to pursue which makes them motivating for me because I want to be better at them. newbies.com/stting-and-acheiving- goals.html

Your Goal Should be Specific and Realistic Make your goal specific and realistic. (  For example: “I want to be a better nurse” is a good goal, but it is very vague. How do you want to be a better nurse? “I want to get an IV in 4 out of 5 times”, that is a specific goal, and it is easier to see when you have completed it.  You do not want a goal that is not achievable. It is not good for the self confidence. You want to have goals that you are able to complete.

Your Goal should be Measurable The website states that “based on experience, majority of good performance goals will have measurable results”. The website did not really explain what “being measurable” meant, but I think it means that if the goal is measurable you will be able to know when the goal is finished.  For example: Instead of “ I want to be a better parent” the goal would be “ I want to spend 2 hours with my kids when I get home from work daily”. newbies.com/stting-and-acheiving- goals.html

Your Goal should be Achievable Having an achievable goal and achieving it builds self esteem. If you set a goal that is not going to be achievable then what is the point of setting the goal in the first place? Setting an unachievable goal will just bring your self esteem down because you are never able to reach that goal. newbies.com/stting-and-acheiving- goals.html

Your Goal Should Be Results-Focused The web article explains this concept very well by saying “When setting goals remember you want to deliver the results towards the organizations objectives. Hence, the goals must be results oriented”. Goals have to be focused on the results because that is what you are trying to achieve in the first place. A goal is set because you want to get a result out of it. acheiving-goals.html acheiving-goals.html

Your Goal Must Be Time-Bound There must be a time limit for your goal. I think this is because without one, well for me anyways, I would not try to achieve the goal. When you set the time limit it should be reasonable and make sense for that specific goal. acheiving-goals.htmlwww.career-success-for-newbies.com/stting-and- acheiving-goals.html
