Utility Collaboration More than 40 utilities in North America are represented

Why collaboration is important?

Electric Vehicles with Extended Range and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) Components of increasingly sophisticated local energy networks Courtesy: EPRI Journal

Smart vehicles = Smart charging Vehicles connects to smart metering infrastructure Utility and vehicle exchange information such as: –Price of electricity –Billing information –Energy needed Charging managed according to user preference Vehicle can respond to utility requests

Impact on the grid Electricity: An important energy source with significant capacity to support transportation 10 million Electric Vehicles with extended range in 2010 would only add an additional load that is less than 1% of the total grid load

Electric Grid Design for Peak Demand

The last 5% of the system’s capacity is needed less than 1% of the time and… The last 25% of the system’s capacity is only needed about 10% of the time The real objective of smart charging is simply to avoid these peaks with most of the vehicles out there It has tremendous value for the utilities – and very achievable once the technology is in place For example, in California like most hot-weather states with a lot of air conditioning, about:

DESIGN

Optimizing the shape of the Volt Balance between aerodynamic performance & styling Functional, efficient, fun-to-drive Minimize aero drag to maximize battery-powered driving range Air moves easily around the car

Balance between aerodynamic performance and styling Rounded, flushed front fascia, closed grille, aerodynamically shaped side mirror, sharp rear edges and a purposefully designed spoiler allow the air to stay attached and then detach quickly at the rear to reduce drag

Designed from the inside out Blend of form & function Cutting-edge features, surprising intuitiveness Comfort, convenience and safety features that customers expect in a four-passenger sedan Human/machine interface factor was the priority

High-tech aesthetic... Warm and inviting Driver-configurable instrument display 7-inch touch screen navigation/vehicle information display Touch-sensitive climate and infotainment controls Optional navigation system with an onboard hard drive for maps and music storage Standard Bluetooth for cellular phone and USB / Bluetooth for music streaming

TECHNOLOGY

What is the Volt?

Volt IS an... Electric Vehicle with extended range that eliminates range anxiety The Volt operates on battery power alone up to 40 miles without using gas or producing emissions It uses electricity to move the wheels at all times and speeds The engine generator provides electricity to power the drive unit for extended-range capability It plugs into a standard household 120V outlet or 240V for charging

Why 40 Miles?

Up to 40 miles of gas- and emission- free driving plus hundreds of miles of extended-range driving

Charge Port Electric Drive Unit How the Volt Works LITHIUM-ION BATTERY Energy Capacity16 kWh Charging Time (Approx.)Less than 3 hours on a 240V About 8 hours on a 120V outlet Battery Life10 years/150,000 miles Starts with the Lithium-Ion Battery Engine Generator
