Accepting Who You Are Accepting yourself is a key part of mental and emotional health To accept yourself you must first recognize your strengths and work on improving your weaknesses

Definition Personality: A combination of your feelings, likes, dislikes, attitudes, abilities and habits.

Influences on Your Personality Many factors shape your personality Three of the most important factors are heredity, environment and behavior

Heredity The passing of biological traits from parents to children You can inherit personality traits from your parents such as being outgoing

Environment Your environment is your family, friends, neighbors, school and even the climate of where you live. An example of this would be coming from a family that is happy and teaches you how to be happy.

Behavior Behavior is how you act and is a big part of your personality. Of the three factors behavior is the one you have the most control over. The actions you choose to take show how you feel about yourself and others.

How to Build Mental and Emotional Health You can work to improve your mental and emotional health. When these inner qualities are strong, your outer life often shows it. The following are some good ways to build strong mental and emotional health……

Have a good attitude and a positive outlook Recognize your strengths and work on your weaknesses Set realistic goals Act responsibly Be able to relax or have fun in a group be aware of your feelings and express them in healthy ways Practice empathy Accept constructive feedback

Resilience: The ability to recover from problems or loss. Definition Resilience: The ability to recover from problems or loss.

Building Resilience Resilience is an important part of mental and emotional health because it allows you to face challenges and move past them in a healthful way. The best way to become more resilient is to make positive choices. This can include strengthening relationships and taking part in activities that make a difference to you or others. Resilient people often have strong support from family and friends.

Your Self-Concept Self-concept is how you see yourself as a student, a friend, and as a member of groups, such as sports teams. It is based on external output from others as well as internal thoughts and experiences.

Influences on Your Self-Esteem Supporting, loving messages build self-esteem Critical, hurtful messages break it down. With this is mind, the TV, radio, and the internet can also affect your self-esteem. Your own attitudes and choices you make can affect self-esteem.
