Why TSM&O CoE ? AASHTO SSOM Task Force on TSM&O CoE 9 April 2013 Jeffrey Lindley, FHWA

U.S. Department of Transportation Why do we need a KTS?  Lack of awareness of current activities related to travel time reliability and transportation systems management and operations (TSM&O)  Strong desire to draw on practitioner knowledge through best practices and peer exchanges  Resources are spread across multiple agencies and organizations □ NTOC, Operations Academy, FHWA, AASHTO, etc.

U.S. Department of Transportation Interim KTS Website  Focuses on SHRP2 research products □ Abstracts and synthesis  Includes other reliability-related knowledge resources □ Gap reports □ Business case resources  Provides links to key external operations website links (FHWA, ITS JPO, ITSA, etc.)  Customized search by topic  Additional features: □ Calendar/FAQs/Glossary/News and Recent Publications

U.S. Department of Transportation Enhanced KTS Website  Expands Technology Transfer function: □ Establishes a forum to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned (peer exchange) □ Broadens focus of database to TSM&O resources □ Continues assessment and update of knowledge gaps □ Enhanced marketing and outreach materials  Additional features: □ Subscription-based newsletter, project profiles, current practices interchange and archive  Staff and/or consultant support needed for updates, content development, management of peer interactions including social networks

U.S. Department of Transportation Operations Center of Excellence  Additional functionalities with staff and management: □ Develop continued knowledge syntheses □ Fill gaps via tacit knowledge capture □ Identify best practice, guidance □ Conduct live/face to face activities (symposia, workshops) □ Facilitate peer-to-peer support (focus groups, etc) □ Support PPP activities □ Coordinate among interest groups/activities – neutral role
