What is Daily 5? Daily 5 is a way of structuring reading instruction so that every student is engaged in meaningful literacy tasks that allow them the opportunity to practice what they have learned in class. Read to Self Listen to Reading Word Work Work on Writing Read to Someone

What is Daily 5? Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given practice time to read and write independently while the teacher provides focused instruction to individuals & small groups. Students learn how to choose books that are a “Good Fit” for them. “Good Fit” books can be read independently and comprehended. Students are encouraged to choose books that interest them because they are more likely to read them.

Benefits of Daily 5 Children cannot become better readers and develop a love for reading without having time to actually read and write. Providing choice is highly motivational and puts kids in charge of their learning. Students have lots of individualized time with the teacher and help develop their own goals to work on independently. Daily 5 provides structure, short intervals of repeated practice, and time to explore – exactly what children this age need!

What is CAFÉ? C – Comprehension (I understand what I read.) A – Accuracy (I can read the words.) F – Fluency (I can read accurately with expression.) E – Expanded Vocabulary (I know, find, and use interesting words.) Mini-lessons are focused around these 4 components. Students are taught reading strategies for each area.

Students will learn to read and understand both literary (fiction) and informational texts (nonfiction). Students will use their knowledge of letters and sounds to read new words and will develop fluency. Students will describe characters, settings, and major events in a story by using details from the story. Students will become familiar with text features in informational texts such as headings, table of contents, glossary, index, captions, and diagrams. Students will compare and contrast characters’ and their experiences. Reading

Writer’s Workshop Students participate in Writer’s Workshop daily. During writer’s workshop the teacher will model writing through a mini-lesson which targets a specific skill or concept. The mini-lesson is followed by independent writing time for students. While the students are writing independently, the teacher conferences with individual students. Students are then given time to share their stories with the class. Students can choose what to write about and how to publish their writing. Students experience and practice all the stages involved in the writing process.

Writing Students will learn to write stories focused on one topic with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Students will write narrative pieces, opinion pieces, and informational pieces. They will use specific details to support their thinking. Students will learn to write complete sentences. Students will use conventions in their writing. -Capitalization (beginning of sentences, names, days of the week, months of the year, places) - Spacing between words -Punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation point, commas, quotation marks)

What is Daily 3? Daily 3 is a framework for structuring math time so that students develop deep conceptual understanding and mathematical proficiency. Math by Myself Partner Math Writing in Math Math Technology

Benefits of Daily 3 Students develop independence, stamina, and accountability. The framework adapts to district-adopted curriculum and state mandates. Teachers are able to meet the differentiated needs of students, to ensure that all students meet the standards.

Math Math instruction will focus on four critical areas. Developing an understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction. Developing an understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including tens and ones. Developing an understanding of linear measurement and units of measurement. Identifying, comparing, and contrasting geometric shapes. Students will have opportunities to work in pairs and small groups. Students are encouraged to verbalize and write explanations on how they solved problems.

Homework Students should read for at least 15 minutes every night. Students should complete the assigned Letterland activity using the spelling words for that week. Students have access to other websites as well for extra practice in reading and math. Reading – Big Universe Math - SumDog

Parent Communication  Two Face-to-Face Conferences Are Required  End of First Quarter  End of Third Quarter Newsletters will be ed every 3 weeks so please make sure you have provided us with a address that you check often. Please check your child’s Daily Folder every night and initial the behavior calendar so that we know you have seen any notes from us regarding your child’s day at school.

Field Trips  Science Made Fun – 5 total field trips  Funky Forces  Soil Rocks!  Astro Adventures  Living Lab  Measure Treasure 75 minutes each - Parents can attend for FREE! We will need 4-5 volunteers for each session. Off campus field trip - TBA

Field Trip Payments This year first grade parents will be able to pay for field trips online. Your payment of $60 covers the five in-school science field trips and our off campus field trip. Directions for online payment will be sent home at a later date.

Volunteers/Chaperones  If you plan to volunteer in the classroom or chaperone on a field trip, you must register and be cleared as a Level 4 volunteer with Wake County Schools.  You must reapply each school year. The system is open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm until October 31 st.  You can register on any Wake County School computer.  You will not be allowed to volunteer or chaperone if you have not been cleared as a WCPSS volunteer. Safety first! NO EXCEPTIONS!  Feel free to register tonight before you leave. The computers in the media center are set up for your convenience.

School-wide bullying prevention program intended to help clarify for students, staff and parents what defines bullying and how it differs from peer conflict.

Bully Before labeling behavior as bullying, it must meet the three following criteria: REPEATED - Does the behavior happen over and over again? INTENTIONAL - Is the behavior intentional, or on purpose? INTIMIDATING - Is there an imbalance in power, or does the behavior create feelings of helplessness, intimidation, or fear? -If all three criteria are met, the behavior is labeled bullying and will be handled accordingly by school administration. -If only one or two of the criteria are met, the behavior is most often labeled peer conflict and students are encouraged to practice conflict resolution skills and seek assistance from adults when needed -Four primary types of bullying (verbal, physical, social, and cyber) are reviewed and students are provided with strategies if they or someone else is bullied -Students are encouraged to create a positive climate for learning, tolerance and acceptance
