6 Number and percentage of older person (60 years or over) to total population: 410 million (10%) in 2007; 733 million (15%) in 2025; 1.3 billion (25%) in 2050 The region is rapidly ageing

7 Objectives Review developments; Review MIPAA implementation; Identify priorities for further actions. 8 Institutional mechanisms, plans, policies, strategies and monitoring for an ageing society; Stronger Government-NGO relations; Increased social protection measures; Ageing-in-place initiatives; Intergenerational solidarity programmes; Enhanced awareness of the media; Highlights of the meeting

9 Mobilizing resources, enhancing knowledge and building capacity; MIPAA implementation more successful in urban areas; Changing family structures; Increasing chronic diseases; Family/income support decline; Access to affordable and quality health-care services. III. Obstacles:

10 The challenges identified: resource constraints, income insecurity, poverty and exclusion in old age. Active involvement of all stakeholders to advance the implementation of MIPAA in the region. IV. Future Priorities for Action: The Macao Outcome Document

11 Increase the level of integration and mainstreaming of ageing concerns in national policies and poverty reduction strategies; Establish and strengthen multi-pillared social security schemes; Ensure affordable, accessible, good quality age- friendly and culturally appropriate health, rehabilitation, palliative and social services; IV. Future Priorities for Action (contd.):

12 Develop age-friendly physical environments to promote ageing in place to ensure readily accessible community level facilities and health services; Promote barrier-free physical environment, transportation, public facilities, services, and information and communications to meet the accessibility needs of older persons; Design policies appropriate to the needs of present and future generations of older persons. IV. Future Priorities for Action (contd.):

13 Build national capacities to identify challenges, formulate appropriate measures and programmes on ageing, and monitor the progress of implementation; Conduct multidisciplinary research for evidence- based planning and decision-making; Mobilize international donor community to provide necessary technical and financial support to address population ageing issues at all levels. V. Cooperation by the UN System to Enhance the Implementation of MIPAA
