Manifest Destiny By: Dhruvil Patel The belief of expansion to the west…

St. Louis Missouri St. Louis Missouri was the place where Lewis and Clark first started their expedition. After President Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase Lewis and Clark headed from here to explore the west. St. Louis is also the starting place for many pioneers and families heading to the west therefore it is called the “Gateway to the West.” Many bought their essential supplies in St. Louis, Missouri for their journey on the trails.

Independence, Missouri Independence, Missouri was one of the most famous “jumping off” point for pioneers and families who were heading to Oregon and California. They packed food and other essential supplies from Independence and headed to Oregon by following the 2,000 miles Oregon trail.

Trail of Tears: Indian Removal Policy on Cherokees “In 1938 to 1839 Andrew Jackson addressed a Indian Removal policy forcing Cherokee Indians to give up their land east of the Mississippi River.” The Cherokee Indians called this journey to the west “Trail of Tears” because of the harshness they faced. About 4,000 out of 15,000 died during that journey from hunger, exhaustion, and disease.

The Alamo The Alamo was the savior cry to thousands of Texans and Americans to get revenge on the Mexicans. In the Alamo, Santa Anna’s army held the Texans surrounded inside the fort. This lasted 13 days and ended in a slaughter. In the end only 2 survived to tell the bolding story to the rest of the world.

The Battle of San Jacinto Sam Houston defeated the Mexican army leader San Anna in less than 20 minutes. There were no survivors left from the Mexican army. San Anna was captured by the Americans and was given the choice of surrender Texas or death. He chose surrender Texas and gave up his native land. The Texan Independence was gained in 1835, and caused many Americans to move to Texas and to the Southwest.

Sauter’s Mill Sauter’s Mill was the first place where gold was discovered in CA attracting millions from other states and countries to the “Gold Rush”. The Gold Rush gave job opportunities to Chinese, Mexicans, Native Americans, and African- Americans. It also gave women chances to work and make money for their families. Most came to mine gold, and few became broke. Others settled there and used the good fertile soil to farm.

Mormons: Salt Lake City, Utah Since the Mormons couldn’t practice their religion in the east they moved to the west. People didn’t adapt to their culture and beliefs, therefore they were forced to move. One of the things they believed in was that a man could have more than one wife. After traveling from numerous places they ended up settling in present day Salt Lake City, Utah. After building their new home, others where attracted to the land, resources, etc.
