11 Louisiana Purchase New territory added to the United States. Thomas Jefferson our 3 rd president, bought the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the U.S. Bought the land from France. Thomas Jefferson hired Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.
