Your High School Career ► TWO SEMESTERS PER YEAR  Sept-Jan, Feb-June  Exams at end of each semester ► FOUR COURSES PER SEMESTER  Grade 10 – students take 8 credits  Grade 11s – take minimum of 7 – one study period (should take 8 if unsuccessful in one or more grade 10 courses)  Grade 12s – take minimum of 6 – two study period (may be required to take an additional course for every unsuccessful course in grade 11, up to a total of 8 courses)

High School Credits: ► Every course taken at PAHS counts as one credit (specific exceptions are noted in course selection book). ► You must have at least 18 credits to graduate.  13 are required credits  5 are elective credits

Of these 18 credits, you need... ► 3 ENGLISH credits (10, 11 and 12) ► 2 MATH credits ► 2 SCIENCE credits  (the first is either Sci 10, Bio 11, Phy 11, or Chem 11) plus one more ► 2 OTHER MATH, SCIENCE or TECH credits ► 1 CANADIAN STUDIES credit (MKS10, CHS11, or ACS11) ► 1 GLOBAL STUDIES credit (GGS12 or HGS12) ► 1 FINE ARTS credit (Art, Music, Dance or Drama) ► 1 PHYS. ED. Credit (Yoga 11, PHEAL 11, Dance 11, PHE 10, 11 or 12, PEL12) Remember: Dance can serve as Fine Arts or Phys. Ed. credit but not both) ► No more than 7 grade 10 credits ► Minimum of 5 grade 12 credits

What is Co-op? ► Co-op is an academic course which students get to explore a career of their choice in an authentic, real-life environment. Students physically leave the school and join the workforce for a 100 hour (minimum) placement over the course of one semester.

What is Co-op? ► Students must first complete a 25 hour (approximately one month) in-school component. ► During this time, students receive training and certification in: First Aid and CPR-A First Aid and CPR-A WHMIS WHMIS Passport to Safety/Occupational Health and Safety Passport to Safety/Occupational Health and Safety

Selecting Co-op ► Acceptance to Co-op is based on an Application and Interview. ► Select Co-op as one of your Choices – if you are not accepted an Alternate will be added to your selections.

Course Changes ► Course changes WILL NOT BE MADE!!!! If you fail a course first semester, you cannot repeat it in the second semester. ► Students are choosing courses for the year and they do not have a choice of the semester in which the course falls. We do our best to balance your requests between semesters. ► It is vital that students keep up with their studying to ensure they are successful in their courses!

Alternates ► As always, choose your alternates carefully! ► If one of your selected courses can not fit into your schedule, then an alternate will be chosen and placed in your schedule. ► Read your Course Selection Book carefully so you know what the courses you are considering are all about.

Why is course selection important ► Career/Life planning and high school ► Post-Secondary Admissions…University, Community College, Private colleges, Work Community College, Private colleges, Work ► University – 5 Academic grade 12 credits (including ENGLISH 12 Academic) ► NSCC – High School Diploma for most programs

Sample University Requirements ► Bachelor of Arts  English 12, plus 4 grade 12 academic credits ► Bachelor of Commerce  English 12, Math 12, plus 3 grade 12 academic credits ► Bachelor of Science  English 12, PreCal, 2 grade 12 science credits, plus 1 grade 12 academic credit ► Bachelor of Nursing  English 12, Math 12, Chem 12, Bio 12, plus 1 grade 12 academic credit

Schedule For Course Selection ► Feb 25 – Mar 8  Computer lab for course selection on Power School with Guidance Counsellors.

In preparation for course selection 1. Ensure you read descriptions of courses in our booklet to familiarize yourself with the course you are choosing Use your Graduation Plan Progress on Power School to determine your progression and courses you need for graduation. 3. Make sure you have the prerequisite before you choose the course (ie., CHEM11 before CHEM12). 4. Come prepared to select your courses on Power School.

Power School Registration Instructions

Log into the Student Portal ► Go to the school website and click on the Student Portal button ► Login using your PowerSchool login name and password. ► If you do not know your login name and/or password please get your information in the library before you register.

Select Class Registration ► Click on the tab for Class Registration ► The appropriate registration sheet will open

Select courses ► Each group of courses allows you to select various course offerings

Select courses ► To pick courses click on the pencil and paper edit icon ► Items with an exclamation mark must be selected, items with a checkmark may be selected if you desire.

Alternate Courses ► To aid in scheduling you must select two alternate courses. ► Select carefully as these courses are used if a course you select is unavailable.

Admission to Dalhousie from High School 1. Completion of secondary school (ie. Gr 12) with a minimum overall average of 70% in your final year. 2. At least a 70% in Grade 12 Academic English. 3. Successful completion of relevant program prerequisite courses.

Admission Requirements 1. The admission requirement for certificate and diploma programs is a high school completion or equivalent. 2. In addition to admission requirements, individual programs may have other admission criteria, such as specific high school subjects, university degrees (for some advanced diplomas) or the submission of an entrance portfolio. 3. Please check the program descriptions for specific admission requirements.
