1 Grade 11 Post Secondary Information GUIDANCE OFFICE

2 Why now?  To ensure you have the correct grade 12 courses to meet the graduation requirements.  To ensure you have the prerequisites for your proposed post secondary program. AKA – admission requirements  Taking courses you do not need that may affect your admission average.  Waiting until grade 12 will limit the courses you may be able to take.  Some of your grade 11 courses will be taken into consideration when applying to post secondary institutions.  You can apply to university as early as October.  NSCC you can apply now.  NSCC wait list for some programs

4 Start your research now.  Take action – actively research – career cruising (www.careercrusing.com )  Electronic research tools. Check websites  Liaison officers – reps at universities and colleges  Visit universities or community colleges  University and college fairs  Out of province schools  Visit the guidance office  Lunch time Drop-in - computer lab Mondays and Fridays.

5 More to think about.  All university and colleges have specific course requirements and some have additional requirements other than academics  Supplemental application information, portfolio, volunteer hours, on the job experience, references, essay, video, interview, etc.

6 Graduation Requirements:  3 English  2 Math  2 Science  2 Technology  1 Physical Education  1 Canadian Studies  1 Fine Arts Credit  1 Global His/Geo 12  5 Grade 12 credits  9 Immersion Credits for those in Immersion Program You are responsible to make sure you have the following compulsory credits for graduation: 18 Credits (minimum) Must have 5 grade 12 credits No more than 7 grade 10 credits

7 Graduation Requirements  It is important to note that if a student fails a course in first semester, it may not be possible to retake the course in second semester due to class sizes.  Ensure you choose the courses you need so you get the courses you want. (staffing)

8 Graduation Requirements French Immersion  To receive a French Immersion certificate, students will have completed 9 credits in French by the end of grade 12.  This includes a minimum of two credits per year with French Language Arts in each year.

9 All students should check to ensure that their grade 12 credits are accepted by the University/program prior to applying (look online or call the Registrar’s Office). 11 Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC)  80% of HS students feel they will go to university, 50% will  13 campuses across Nova Scotia  Over 140 program options - suitable for all types of students  Nova Scotia is experiencing a shortage of skilled workers (shipbuilding)  Application format has changed  Articulation agreements exist in many programs

12 Articulation Agreement “2+2” Something to think about  NSCC has a large number of programs that qualify for “2 + 2”. Through agreements made with universities across Canada, a student who completes specific NSCC diploma programs can receive advance standing in certain degree programs.  For example, achieving the business administration diploma at NSCC gives a student advance standing in the Commerce degree program at several universities. There are definite cost advantages to this! You can check this out through the link to “articulation agreements” on the NSCC website.
