Who’s in Charge? Types of Government

Representative Democracy What is a Representative Democracy? This government is led by elected representatives of the voters. In a Direct Democracy, every Citizen would have a vote in all decisions. Examples: United States

Monarchy / Parliamentary What is a Monarchy? A monarchy has a king or queen, who sometimes has absolute power. Usually Monarchies include a parliamentary system that uses elected officials. Examples: England

Theocracy What is a Theocracy? A government that is controlled by religious leaders. They usually refuse modern materialism. Theocratic governments also use other types of governments as well. Example: Iran (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – President)

Dictatorship What is a Dictatorship? Rule by a single leader who may or may not have been elected to seize power. They use the military to maintain control. They will always have TOTAL power!!! Examples: Adolf Hitler (Nazi Germany) / Saddam Hussein (Iraq) / Fidel Castro (Cuba)

Authoritative Totalitarianism What is an Authoritative Totalitarianism? Rule by a single political party. People are forced to do what the government tells them. The government controls all businesses and provides all citizens with health care, education and welfare. Most of the communist/socialist countries fall into this category. Example: China & North Korea Russia
