3 Government is the organization set up to make laws, settle disagreements, and to provide protection for its citizens

4 Branches of Government

5 Legislative Branch: Part of the government responsible for making laws

6 Executive Branch: Carries out and enforces the laws made by the legislative branch.

7 Judicial Branch: Interprets the laws made by the legislative branch

8 Who’s in charge? Who has the power?

9 Autocratic: One person has all the power Example: North Korea

10 Oligarchic: Few or a small group has all the power. Example: China

11 Democratic: All citizens have the power. Examples: India and South Korea

12 How is the power shared?

13 Unitary: The central government has all the power Example: China or Saudi Arabia

14 Federal: Power is shared between the central and local governments Example: India and the United States

15 Confederacy: Power is shared equally amongst all voluntary members Example: the European Union and OPEC

17 Monarchy: Rule by a king or queen or other hereditary ruler Examples: Saudi Arabia and England

18 Republic: A country with an elected leader. Citizens have the power. Example: India and Israel

19 Democracy: Rule by the people Examples: Israel and Turkey

20 Dictatorship: Rule by one person Example: North Korea

21 Types of Monarchies: Absolute Monarchy: Ruler has total power. Example: Saudi Arabia Constitutional Monarchy: Laws limit powers of the ruler. Example: Japan

22 Types of Democracy: Presidential Democracy: Citizens directly elect the head of the executive branch. Example--- South Korea Parliamentary Democracy: Citizens vote for political parties; winning party selects head of the executive branch. Example--- Israel
