Introduction Click here for my video introduction to this presentation. As a first grade teacher, I understand that students learn best when they are motivated. Using computers and technology in the classroom can help teachers find new and exciting ways to present material to their students.

Why use the Internet? Research best practices in reading and language arts Visit other teachers’ websites for activities and lesson plan ideas Incorporate online games and stories into daily lessons Find forms and checklists that can be adapted for classroom use.

Reading Research Teachers can use the Internet as a research tool to learn more about reading Reading Rockets has articles for parents and teachersReading Rockets Learning to Read has a list of websites related to reading and language artsLearning to Read 4 Blocks Literacy Framework explains the guided reading process4 Blocks Literacy Framework

More Reading Research Here is a sample from the 4 Blocks Literacy Framework website:4 Blocks Literacy Framework Guided Reading Overview Focus: Expose children to wide range of literature Teach comprehension strategies Teach children to read in materials that become increasingly more difficult Segment One: minutes Teacher directs a whole group lesson builds students’ prior knowledge leads a shared, choral, or echo reading discusses key vocabulary in context of story other identified needs

Lessons and Activities Teachers can find ideas for lesson plans and activities on the internet. Teaching Heart is filled with ideas for different seasonal themes and authors.Teaching Heart School Express has lesson plans and printable worksheets for teachers to share.School Express Dr. Jean’s website includes ideas for songs, poems, crafts, and classroom projects.Dr. Jean

A Sample Activity Here’s an idea for a classroom book, taken from Dr. Jean’s website. Use digital camera to take pictures of students during the school day. Type a caption for each picture Read the book as a class to get students used to the schedule.

Poems I Am Special Hundreds of birds in the sky, Hundreds of fish in the sea, Hundreds of flowers in the field But there's only one of me! Anne LaBoon’s Kindergarten PadAnne LaBoon’s Kindergarten Pad features poems grouped according to theme. Here is a sample:

Forms and Checklists On a website called Kinderthemes, I found a reading log that can be used to bridge the home-school gap. I modified it for my own classroom. Kinderthemes Many forms found on the Internet can be used in the classroom. __________________’s Reading Log Dear Parents, Please read 3 or more books with your child each week. Please record the names of the books below and return the form each Monday with your child's homework. Thank you! Miss Mosiondz I have read the following books with my child this week: 1.__________________________________ 2.__________________________________ 3.__________________________________ (Please list additional books on the back of this form) Parent Signature _________________________ Date: __________________________________

How can technology motivate students? Make reading into a game with the Internet! Online games for language arts practice Game Goo Interactive stories and games Starfall Kiz Club

Interactive Stories Children can listen to stories read aloud on Starfall

Fun Games Then play a matching game to practice letter sounds

Conclusion The Internet is an extremely useful tool for teachers who want to… Enhance their lessons Motivate their students Learn more about reading Make their job easier!

Additional Reading This presentation was based on a research paper that discussed various ways to merge technology and the teaching of reading. Click below to read my research paper. Thank you!
