Thanksgiving Name of Holiday: Thanksgiving When: Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. Why: In 1620, Pilgrims sailed to America and settled on the west of Cape Cod, a place named Plymouth. This was hard time for them because winter has started and they were not able to plant food. Cold temperature had not allowed them to construct any settlement. Nearly half of the people from their group died during their first long and harsh winter in America. The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to hunt and grow corn. The pilgrims invited the Native Americans to a three-day feast to celebrate the autumn harvest. This celebration after harvest was practiced every year and in 1863 president Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day. How it is celebrated: Today, families celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and an NFL football game are special Thanksgiving Day events. Why I like this holiday: Every year I gather with my family and we have a giant meal of turkey and many different desserts. After dinner, my family and I go on a long walk, and later that night we play games together. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because I get to spend time with my family and we eat special foods and have fun together. HS ESL A-1 UNIT 10 LESSONS & ACTIVITIES 2
