Thanksgiving November 27, 2014

History of Thanksgiving What is Thanksgiving? It is a federal holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 when the pilgrims invited the Indians to a three-day feast to celebrate the autumn harvest.

The Pilgrims Who were the pilgrims? The pilgrims were a small group of people who sailed from England to North America in order to start a new life. They sailed on the Mayflower ship and landed on Plymouth Rock after 66 days at sea. The Native American Indians taught them to grow food and live in the new land.

First Thanksgiving The first Thanksgiving was to celebrate the first harvest of all the food the pilgrims had learned to grow. To give their thanks to the Native Americans for all of their help, the Pilgrims invited them to a feast that lasted for three days! This is the reason we celebrate with a feast of food that is typical for Autumn and say the things that we are thankful for.

Thanksgiving Traditions On Thanksgiving morning we all get up very early to prepare the turkey because it takes all day to cook. Then while all the food is cooking, people watch the Macy´s Thanksgiving Parade or American Football on the TV. Once the food is ready, everyone gathers around the table and says what they are thankful for this year. Then they eat and eat and eat until they are too full to eat anymore. Then people take a nap and when they wake up, they eat more!
