Presentation transcript:

6 Energy efficient transport 6 Moving sustainably

6 Energy efficient transport Rethinking transport Transport essential to businesses and individuals But accounts for 20% of EU energy use and growing fast Most goods transported by road – one of most energy intensive modes Cleaner transport modes exist but need change in attitudes and correct policies

6 Energy efficient transport What is the EU doing? Energy efficiency action plan (2006) includes transport Car fuel efficiency-labelling directive (1999) Green paper on urban mobility (Sept 2007) Intelligent Energy Europe II ( ) funds transport projects Research for energy-efficient transport technologies CIVITAS helps cities implement efficient transport ELTIS supports best practice in urban and regional transport Mobility Week promotes cleaner transport to public and businesses Marco Polo programme supports freight shift from road transport

6 Energy efficient transport Cleaner road vehicles and urban transport Maximising efficient forms of transport essential – e.g. public transport in towns and trains for longer journeys But cars will remain significant transport form – the vehicles used should be most efficient Considerable potential to save energy through more efficient components in road vehicles – air conditioning, tyres Cleaner car models exist, but need support to compete on market Support needed for research and development of technologies – electric, hybrid or fuel cell vehicles Inefficient urban transport causes unnecessary energy consumption Local authorities can take lead Buses and rubbish lorries can run on clean energy

6 Energy efficient transport Good practice 1: La Ribera in biodiesel (2003 onwards) Community project in La Ribera region (Spain) Solves waste problems and fights climate change Collects waste oil from food businesses, converts to biodiesel Fuel used in public vehicle fleets In 2004, litres of oil collected from 418 businesses To be extended to private cars – biofuel fitted service stations to open Extending collection to household oil Coordinated by L'Agència Energètica de la Ribera (AER)

6 Energy efficient transport Energy efficiency in other transport modes More awareness needed of alternatives to road transport, especially for long-distance goods transport. Includes switch to rail in mountains or developing motorways of the sea Air transport has much greater energy intensity than other modes – and its environmental impact is growing fast Scope to combine transport modes much more effectively

6 Energy efficient transport Re-thinking mobility Changing our attitudes is vital Actions for individuals – more use of public transport, car-sharing, cycling, home working Local authorities and businesses can lead communities by promoting sustainable mobility for their employees Schools can raise awareness amongst youngsters Driving schools and car dealers can promote eco- driving

6 Energy efficient transport Good practice 2: ECODRIVEN Campaign across nine countries in Raising awareness of eco-driving – driving techniques that lead to fuel savings of 5-10% Benefits in addition to lower emissions include cost savings, fewer accidents and less noise Organised by municipalities, SMEs and hauliers, together with car dealers, fuel stations, touring clubs, shops, motorists' associations and schools Aiming to reach 2.5 million drivers and avoid 0.5 million tonnes CO 2 by

6 Energy efficient transport What is ManagEnergy? Initiative by European Commission Directorate-General for Energy and Transport Supports local and regional actions on energy efficiency and renewable energies Training workshops/online events Information on case studies, good practices, legislation and programmes Network of local and regional energy agencies (LEAs)
