Presentation transcript:

oneone CS-5C Objective: Use the displacement method in order to determine the volume of small irregularly shaped solids. CSI Note: How can you find the volume of oddly shaped solids? Drill: 1. Get a ditto from the SET. 2. Identify the graduation scale for each picture. 3. Record the volume shown by each graduated cylinder.

oneone CS-5C Definition: Volume – the amount of SPACE an object or substance takes up

oneone CS-5C Discussion and Demo: 1. Have you ever overflowed the water in a bathtub? 2. What would happen if you dropped a rock into a container of water? a. Why does this occur? 3. What if you dropped the rock in a graduated cylinder? 4. How can you find the volume of an irregularly shaped solid?

oneone CS-5C Finding Volume of an Irregularly Shaped Solid 1.Fill the graduated cylinder with a sufficient amount of water. This is the starting volume. Record this volume in the data chart, “Volume of Irregularly Shaped Solids”. Do not use too much. 2.Tilt the graduated cylinder slightly sideways. 3.Slide the irregularly shaped object into the water. Be careful not to spill or splash any water. 4.Read the volume of the object and water. This is the ending volume.

oneone CS-5C 5.Record the ending volume of the object and water in the data chart, “Volume of Irregularly Shaped Solids.” Be sure to use the correct units. 6. Subtract the volume you started with in Step A from the volume you recorded from Step E. This is the volume of the object. 7. Record the volume of the object in the data chart.

oneone CS-5C THIS METHOD FOR FINDING THE VOLUME OF AN IRREGULARLY SHAPED SOLID IS KNOWN AS THE DISPLACEMENT METHOD.

oneone CS-5C Use the procedures above to find the volume of 4 solids.

oneone CS-5C Volume of Irregularly Shaped Solids ObjectEnding Volume (mL) (Water and Object) Starting Volume (mL) (Water Only) Volume of Solid (cm 3 ) ROCK CLAY

oneone CS-5C The method used to determine the volume of an irregularly shaped solid is called the displacement method. It is called this because the space that makes up the solid “displaces” the water already in the graduated cylinder causing the water to rise to the new level.

oneone CS-5C Question: Explain why you need to subtract the starting volume from the ending volume when you are using the displacement method to determine the volume of an irregularly shaped solid. (Tell what each volume represents.) STARTER SENTENCE I need to subtract the starting volume from the ending volume.

oneone CS-5C HOMEWORK: Explain what you have learned about volume over the last several days.
