oneone CS-5A Objective: Use a graduated cylinder in order to determine the volume of liquids. CSI Note: How can you find the volume of a liquid? Drill: Answer the question below in your Drill Book. Include a topic sentence Will yesterday’s method for finding volume work for liquids? Explain.

oneone CS-5A Using a Graduated Cylinder A volume-measuring device called the graduated cylinder is used for measuring the space occupied by liquids. Graduated cylinders are made in many sizes. The level of the liquid in the graduated cylinder shows the volume of the liquid. There is a relationship between the units of measurement for liquids and the units of measurement used for volumes of rectangular solids. Graduated cylinders have marks (graduations), which tell us the quantity of liquid that is in the cylinder. The graduated cylinders used in most laboratories are graduated in metric units called milliliters (mL) or in parts of a liter. Some large graduated cylinders are graduated in centiliters, deciliters, and even liters.

oneone CS-5A After a liquid is added to the graduated cylinder certain care needs to be taken to get an accurate measurement of the volume. The first consideration is that you always read a graduated cylinder at eye level. Also, the liquid in the cylinder may have a curved surface called the meniscus. When taking a measurement always read the volume at the bottom of the meniscus (see Figure 1). Always check the unnumbered marks on a graduated cylinder to see how many sections there are and what they measure. Also, sometimes you have to estimate a measurement between two marks. Figure 1

oneone CS-5A Exploration 1. Get a partially filled graduated cylinder from the lab demo table. 2. Place the cylinder on a level surface. 3. Read the volume of the water in the graduated cylinder. 4. Record the container # and the volume in the data chart, “Volume of Liquids”. 5. Return the graduated cylinder to the demo area. 6. Repeat steps a. – e. until the chart is filled.

oneone CS-5A Question: What volumes can’t a graduated cylinder measure? a. Gases b. Liquids greater than capacity c. Most solids

oneone CS-5A Homework: Suppose that you found a small rock, and you wanted to find the volume of the rock. Could you use a graduated cylinder to find the volume? Explain.
