1 Finding Volume of Irregular Objects
Water Displacement Video Archimedes Greek Lived from 287 BC to 212 BC Mathematician, Physicist, Inventor, Engineer

2 How to Read a Graduated Cylinder
meniscus When finding the volume, bend down so the graduated cylinder is at eye level. Then read the number at the dip.

3 Reading the Graduated Cylinder
What is this reading? 18.0 mL

4 Volume of an Irregular object
Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. When you have an object that is difficult to measure you can use a graduated cylinder and water. This is called the water displacement method.

5 Measuring Solid Volume
10 cm 9 cm 8 cm We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. _____ X _____ X _____ = _____ We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______cm³

6 Finding Volume using Water Displacement
1. Fill the cylinder with water to a level above the height of the object 2. Record the starting volume 3. Add the object (tilt/slide) 4. Read and record the level of the water again (ending volume) 5. Subtract the numbers 6. Change the unit from mL to cm³

7 USE WATER DISPLACEMENT TO FIND THE VOLUME OF THE MINI-DINO
BEFORE AFTER Water displacement Water level before= Water level after= 5.6ml Volume of MINI-DINO= 4.8ml 5.6ml – 4.8ml = 0.8 cm³

8 TICKET OUT Summarize the process of calculating the volume of an object using the water displacement method Calculate the volume of the object to the right. Remember to include your units
