1 Bell Ringer Which of the following is the best description of measuring the volume of an object? How loud an object sounds How much space an object takes up How much mass is in a given amount of space *Defend your answer and write it on the White Board.

2 Lesson Title: Measuring Volume (Pg 7)
Volume - How much space an object takes up

3 *Square/Rectangular objects are measured:
Length (L) x Width (W) x Height (H) W H L 10 cm x 2 cm x 4 cm = 80 cm³

4 Beaker *Tools used (liquid volume) – Beaker or Graduated Cylinder
Units - Milliliter (ml) Liter (l) Beaker

5 Let’s Do It.

6 Measuring the Volume of a
*225 ml (approx) Measuring the Volume of a Liquid Substance *When measuring in a beaker, make sure you read the measurements from smallest (bottom) to largest. *If the liquid level is between numbers, you must estimate the value of the measurement.

7 Let’s Do It.

8 *Write your answer on the White Board.
Bell Ringer How would you measure the volume of a solid object such as a rock, or a chair, or even a person? *Write your answer on the White Board.

9 *Measuring in a graduated cylinder
48

10 *When measuring in a graduated cylinder, make sure you read the level at the meniscus (the bottom of the curve) 48 Meniscus 47.6 ml

11 Let’s Do It.

12 *Measuring irregular shaped objects

13 How do we measure volume?
*Water Displacement – Change in the volume of water Starting water level = 19 ml Ending water level = 29 ml Volume = 10 ml (29 – 19)

14 *Water Displacement Starting water level = 64 ml Ending water level = 68 ml Volume = 4 ml (68 – 64)

15 Let’s Do It.

16 Closing Quick Write - Explain how you would measure the volume of Mr. McLeod using the water displacement method. *Write your answer below your notes
