Tobacco’s Web of Addiction Tobacco is as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Tobacco use soon becomes a habit, which can lead to addiction. The best way to prevent tobacco addiction is to never start using tobacco. When nicotine enters the body, it interacts with receptors in the brain. The brain sends a message to the body to speed up heart and breathing rates. As these feelings go away, they leave the user wanting more.

Tolerance and Dependence As the body gets used to nicotine, it develops a tolerance to the drug. tolerance A process in which the body needs more and more of a drug to get the same effect
