Strategic Objectives By improving synergies between the European national ARD programmes, increase the effectiveness and efficiency of European research planning, funding and implementation to fight poverty and hunger and to support a more rapid and sustainable development in the poorest countries in the world. By improved cooperation and coordination of national ARD programmes, strengthen Europes contribution to, and impact on, regional and global ARD systems

SPECIFICITIES of ERA ARD In most MS, several ministries are involved in ARD (usually 3) Coordination is within Europe towards DCs Driven not only by a research agenda, but also by a policy agenda (strong ODA dimension) Research and capacity development activities cannot be dissociated > Implications for the project

Coordinated Call Title: Bioenergy – an opportunity or threat to the rural poor Issues include: Impact of bioenergy on food security Impact of bioenergy on poverty alleviation and rural development Impact of bioenergy on natural resources (land, water, ecosystems, biodiversity)

Coordinated Call Some principles of the call Open to research consortia of minimum 3 different countries of which at least 2 are from ERA ARD consortium members + 1 from least/low income countries Funding through national funding organisations (virtual common pot) 1 stage call Establish a Call Steering Committee & Call Secretariat ERA ARD covers costs of coordination
