Synergies to fuel Researchers’ Careers Luxembourg, 10 – 11 December 2015 organised by 10 December 2015 – Plenary Session COFUND state of play and challenges Alessandra Luchetti Head of Department "Excellent Science" European Commission - Research Executive Agency

Content  History of COFUND  COFUND in H2020  COFUND state of play  COFUND challenges 2

Rationale from the FP7 PEOPLE Work Programme (2007) "Rather than providing the possibility for trans-national experiences only through direct Community actions, the co-funding action aims to encourage existing or new regional and national programmes to open up to and provide for trans-national mobility, as well as to reinforce international programmes." 3 History of COFUND

Objectives  Increase the European-wide mobility possibilities for training and career development of experienced researchers  Encourage regional, national and international fellowship programmes to open for trans-national mobility  Structuring the European Research Area 4 History of COFUND

Expected impact 1.Enabling the relevant regional, national and international actors to contribute to the development of high quality human resources, by introducing and/or further developing the trans- national mobility dimension 2.Increasing the numerical and/or qualitative impact, in terms of supported researchers or working/employment conditions. 3.Combating fragmentation in terms of objectives, evaluation methods and working conditions of regional, national or international offers in this area. 5 History of COFUND

MCA COFUND in FP7 (2007-2013)  6 calls  More than 500M€ total budget  170 projects  9000 post-doctoral researchers 6 History of COFUND

 Enable research funders to align strategies and implementation practices with Horizon 2020 objectives in human resources development  Important principles set out by the EU for the human resources development in research:  European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/index.cfm/rights/index  EU Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/index.cfm/services/researchPolicies COFUND in Horizon 2020
