“TO A SKYLARK” PERCY B. SHELLEY

Born August 4, One of the major English Romantic Poets. Considered the finest lyric poet in the English language. Best known for his poems : “Ozymandias”, “Ode to the West Wind”, “To a Skylark”, “Music”, “When Soft Voices Die”, “The Cloud”, and “The Masque of Anarchy”. A month before his 30 th birthday, sank in his sailboat and drowned to death. Died July 8, PERCY B. SHELLEY

The meaning and message of the poem is that mankind should take time to appreciate nature’s greatest beauties. The man listens to the skylark’s singing and realizes its beauty and uniqueness without any artificial man made sounds. Also, the man admires the freedom the skylark has, knowing that it can fly wherever it pleases with no limits. The skylark can escape from all evils of society. MEANING AND MESSAGE

Simile- “Like a cloud of fire” explains how the bird is and/ or what it is doing. It gives more of an idea. Personification- “From one lonely cloud” Exaggerates the skylark’s doings and to explain the characteristics of nature. Alliteration- “And singing still dost soar, and soaring ever singest” Emphasize the skylark’s beauty and loudness of its voice. Rhyme- “In the golden lightning Of the sunken sun, O’er which clouds bright’ning, Thou dost float and run; Like an unbodied joy whose race is just begun.” Makes the poem easier to read. Also, helps the poem become a song. Hyperbole- “With music as sweet as love, which overflows her bower.” To show how unique and wonderful the skylark is. FIVE IMPORTANT POETIC DEVICES

The poems creates the visual of the romantic period by expressing all of the beauties the skylark has and how mankind cannot ruin the wonders of nature. Percy B. Shelley, also created natural rhythms in the poem which was popular in this time period. THOUGHTS OF THE TIME PERIOD

MODERN SONG CONNECTION

We chose “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley because in the song he talks about being happy and not too worry about the little things in life. “Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing is going to be all right.” That line fits well with the poem because the skylark symbolizes peace and freedom. It symbolizes that society will soon at ease. CONNECTION WITH SONG
