Balanced Science Chemistry Honors and College Prep

Day 1: NECAP Practice The question you see here is a typical question found on the NECAP test that asks you to interpret data found on a graph and select the best explanation. 1.What is the dependent variable? 2.What is the independent variable? 3.What is a reactant? 4.What is a product? 5.What does the line in the graph express? 6.What does the changing line tell you about the reaction?

Day 2: Scientific Method Practice: Writing a Hypothesis Write a prediction for the following problem: Write a prediction for the following problem: Why do colors separate from each other in paper chromatography? Why do colors separate from each other in paper chromatography? This will be assessed on a 5-0 scale using the Introduction section of the Chariho Lab Report Rubric. This will be assessed on a 5-0 scale using the Introduction section of the Chariho Lab Report Rubric.

Day 3: Scientific Method Practice: Feedback on Hypothesis Task to Complete From Lab Rubric Comments Hypothesis Solution to problem is stated Justification of solution is explained Justification of solution is linked to concept/theory Concept is briefly discussed (5) Possible question(s) anticipated

Day 4: Scientific Method Practice: Creating or Interpreting graphs Create a graph from the data below or analyze the graph below and write a brief summary of your analysis. Create a graph from the data below or analyze the graph below and write a brief summary of your analysis. This will be assessed using the Data and Analysis section of the Chariho Lab Report Rubric. This will be assessed using the Data and Analysis section of the Chariho Lab Report Rubric. Effect of Salt on the Freezing Point of water Salt Added Freezing Point 5g -4.8 O C 10g -9.7 O C 15g O C 20g O C

Day 5: Scientific Method Practice: Data and Analysis Feedback Task to Complete From Lab Rubric Comments Data Drawings, tables and/or charts are neat and typed Drawings, tables and/or charts are titled and have proper units Text accompanies data explaining its significance Accurate details of color, pattern, proportion, or texture are shown, (5) - Put to scale

Day 5: Scientific Method Practice: Data and Analysis Feedback Task to Complete From Lab Rubric Comments Results Calculations are present (where appropriate) Calculations have titles and units (where appropriate) Observations are graphed Graphs have proper titles and units Text identifies trends shown on graphs (do not explain trends) (5) – Define the terms mentioned in the trend

Day 6: Scientific Writing – Critical Thinking Based on the data, the student hypothesized, “As more salt is added to water, the temperature of the water decreases.” Is this hypothesis supported by the data? Based on the data, the student hypothesized, “As more salt is added to water, the temperature of the water decreases.” Is this hypothesis supported by the data? This writing will be assessed using the Scientific Explanation Rubric / Constructed Response Rubric. This writing will be assessed using the Scientific Explanation Rubric / Constructed Response Rubric. Effect of Salt on the Freezing Point of water Salt Added Freezing Point 5g -4.8 O C 10g -9.7 O C 15g O C 20g O C

Day 7: Scientific Writing – Critical Thinking Feedback 4 Exceeds Standard 3 Meets Standard 2 Below Standard 1 Little Progress Toward Standard 0 -Explanation uses appropriate scientific vocabulary. -Explanation includes examples to explain the relationships within the content and application of that content. -The student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the science of the task. No errors or omissions are present in the response. - Explanation uses appropriate scientific vocabulary. -Explanation includes examples to explain the relationships within the content. -The student demonstrates a thorough understanding of the science of the task. The response may contain minor errors that do not detract from the demonstration of understanding. -Basic definition with some correct scientific vocabulary. -Answer connected to relevant content. -The student has provided a response that demonstrate s a general understandi ng of the science of the task. -Answer attempted with basic definition -The student has provided a response that is only partially correct. No work submitt ed or incorre ct answer.
