What is a QR code? It’s a type of barcode invented by the Japanese motor industry to keep track of spare parts.

Main characteristics Characteristics of QR Codes:  Faster readability (compared to other barcodes)  Greater storage capacity than traditional UPC barcodes: up to 1,837 characters instead of 12 numerical digits.

Main applications Today is widely used for product identification, exchange of vCards, time tracking, document management, and it has also become a form of art. Other applications: Mobile phones: quickly browse to a website by scanning from the phone’s camera the QR code

EXAMPLE OF USE WITH MOBILE PHONE Scanning QR codes can be done with all new smartphones: Android, iOS, Windows Phone using the in built camera as a scanner. Creating QR codes on a desktop/Excel and then printing them out on paper sticker is even easier!

OTHER USEFUL PHONE TECHNOLOGY  Most smartphones also have databases that can be synchronized with a server on a desktop (through usb cable).  Geolocation: get coordinates of product, equipment location, distribution site…  Send with details of survey done  Connect to a webservice to access data (i.e. weather service) or insert data in a remote database

What are the potential uses for the humanitarian community? There are several areas where it could be used in conjunction with a phone:  Beneficiary identification using QR Codes which can be later scanned and registered in a database  More secure FSL/WASH vouchers using QR codes and encryption, and so finance scans and then gets automatically a total of the vouchers to be paid to suppliers.

What are the potential uses for the humanitarian community?  Staff ID cards with QR codes  Catalogue references for future Log IS?  Product referencing in ACF stores using barcodes  Equipment tracking using QR codes as labels for equipment  example next

Field level Capital EXAMPLE OF EQUIPMENT TRACKING

BENEFITS ON EQUIPMENT  Faster inventory: only scanning of QR codes needed  Inventory would record:  date last seen,  current user,  current project assigned to,  exact location of equipment through GPS coordinates (with map)  photo of equipment

ADDITIONAL NEEDS AND COSTS - Smartphone: < 200 USD - Tamper-proof label printer: = 300 USD - With a bit more money, use mobile printers (WI-FI or Bluetooth to mobile). - Desktop (already exists or Log IS or Excel) - Programmer: on free time - Time needed: a few evenings and week-ends
