Setting up the Spanish User Group of the Marine GMES/Copernicus Component Enrique Alvarez Fanjul Puertos del Estado

Spanish Marine GMES User group Final USERS Oceanographic institutions MyOcean Conceptual organization Kick-off Meeting Spanish Marine GMES UG (Madrid, Oct 18 th 2012) Kick-off Meeting Iberian MyO IBI-MFC Users (Madrid, Nov 13 th 2012)

59 Partners, 28 countries MyOcean ( ) / MyOcean 2 ( ) GMES Marine Service /ECOMF in 2014 MyOcean ( ) / MyOcean 2 ( ) GMES Marine Service /ECOMF in 2014 An Open and free service for all users

What is MyOcean?: the top to obtain a unique dynamic and 3D vision of the Ocean ANYWHERE (Global + 6 Regional Seas) FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP AT ANY TIME (past, present, future) REAL TIME or PAST PERIOD Ice Temperature Salinity Biogeochemical Sea Level Currents

MyO delivers a core Service Go to: Mailto:  Products – Currents, Temperature, Salinity, Sea Level, Ice, Biogeochemistry, … – Observation- and model-based products – Real-time and delayed mode – Quality indices – One catalogue  Services – Discovering, viewing, downloading – One desk  Policy – Open and free

Users & uses reinforcing safety at sea (offshore operations, search & rescue…) combatting oil spills, monitoring water quality, assessing environmental impact, delivering data for Climate Change scenarios, protecting living marine resources, harnessing thermal water energy predicting coastal erosion (…).

Spanish User Group: Objectives… Articulate an Spanish IBI Users Network: (what for?) To exchange experiences, and to enhance feedbacks between MCS and users. (final long-term scope?) to improve or generate new MCS & downstream services and make them user-driven (who?) In a first phase, focused on operational users (Intermediate users) and some key end-users. (how?) Some actions already launched…

The Product Flow (from MCS to end-users) TAC MFC Downstream Products TAC: Thematic Assembly Center. Compilation & distribution of measured data Users MFC: Marine Forecasting Center. Ocean forecasts based on numerical modeling MyOcean (Marine Core Service) Spanish GMES UG Sphere of Activity MyO Providers Intermediate Users Downstream Service Providers Key end-users (i.e. S&R Office)

The Spanish User Group: Institutions… Articulate an Spanish IBI Users Network: (what for?) To exchange experiences, and to enhance feedbacks between MCS and users. (final long-term scope?) to improve or generate new MCS & downstream services and make them user-driven (who?) In a first phase, focused on operational users (Intermediate users) and some key end-users. (how?) Various initiatives already started…

Spanish User Group: Institutions… 13 Groups articulates (by now) the Spanish Users Network: 11 Intermediate/end user. 2 Institutions related to MyO MCS. Number of people implicated: 25 technical contacts (already members of the mailing list) 23 attendees to the Spanish IBI User Group Kick-off Meeting (Madrid, 13th Nov 2012). Number of active MyOcean users: 9 (and rising up!)

Spanish User Group: First actions… Generation of communication tools: A mailing list. A dedicated web page (soon available) Open a technical forum (specific for IBI-MFC user group) Set up a Working Group for making progress on local nesting into IBI-MFC regional products. Update existing downstrem systems to use MCS products Ease generation of new local system using experience and knowledge from the already existing ones using MCS. Web Tool for comparing (validating) model solutions in overlapping areas.
