1 Operational Oceanography Science and Services for Europe and Mediterranean Srdjan Dobricic, CMCC, Bologna, Italy on behalf of National Group of Operational Oceanography

2 OUTLINE The GMES European Marine Service and the Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network: the system design and implementation The observing system status The deterministic forecast system components and the quality of the products Estimates of physical conditions in the North-Western Mediterranean in March 2006

3 The European GMES Marine Core Service functions
Satellite and in situ data Geoportal For Data Access The Marine Core Service will deliver regular and systematic reference information on the state of the oceans and regional seas of known quality and accuracy

4 The GMES Marine Core service is an European production integrated system
5 Thematic Assembly Centres 7 Monitoring and Forecasting Centres Observations Models Service Desk Global Ocean Sea Level Arctic Ocean Ocean Color Baltic Sea Sea Surface Temp. Atlantic NWS Sea Ice & Wind Atlantic IBI In Situ Mediterranean Sea Black Sea

5 The Marine Core Service for users: 4 areas of benefit
MARINE AND COASTAL ENVIRONMENT GMES service delivers a service to: European agencies (EEA, EMSA, EDA, ...) Member State Users: National / Regional Service Providers (public or private) Intergovernmental bodies (OSPAR, UNEP-MAP, HELCOM, ICES, ...) Private businesses MARINE RESOURCES MARINE SAFETY WEATHER, CLIMATE & SEASONAL FORECASTING 5

6 Users are service providers
;, Climate & Seasonal Forecasting 29% Marine Safety: Marine Operations (23%), Defence (10%), Search & Rescue (15%), Weather forecasting (19%), Ship routing (10%), Environmental Hazard (23%) Marine and Coastal Environment: Coastal Activities (34%), Water Quality (34%), Pollution (32%) Climate and Seasonal Forecasting: Seasonal Forecasting (20%), Climate Monitoring (63%), Ice Monitoring (17%) Marine Resource: Fish Stock Management (100%) Marine Safety 31% Marine Resource 13% Marine & Coastal Environment 27%

7 The components of operational oceanography in the Mediterranean Sea: 1995-today
Numerical models of hydrodynamics, waves and biochemistry at basin scale RT Observing System satellite SST, SLA, VOS-XBT, moored multiparametric buoys, ARGO and gliders Numerical models of different complexity for shelf and coastal areas End-User applications / Downstream services

8 MOON data collection system: Basin scale and real time
Multiparametric buoys in: Ligurian Sea, Adriatic Sea and Cretan Sea (few hours delay) click XBT VOS/SOOP high resolution (12 nm along track and full profile transmission, few hours delay) Click 20 ARGO floats deployed from VOS (few hours delay) Daily satellite SST interpolated in RT on model grid (one day delay) JASON-1, GFO, ENVISAT, T/P Sea Level Anomalies (few days delay) T/¨P ENVISAT ERS JASON GFO Scatterometer DAILY winds analysis, 1/2x1/2 (one week delay) Open ocean monitoring by gliders (few hours delay) click

9 MFS: large scale numerical forecasting models
Hydrodynamics (INGV) Horizontal res: 1/16°x1/16° ~ 6.5Km Vert res: 72 unevenly spaced levels Lateral open boundary condition in the Atlantic: nesting in Mercator global model Coupled wave-current model for wind drag coefficient Surface atmospheric pressure: pre-operational implementation B) Waves (INGV) CODE: WAM 4.5 Horizontal res: 1/16°x1/16° ~ 6.5Km Same bathymetry than hydrodynamics 24 directional bins, 30 frequency bins (0.05Hz-> Hz) bins. Coupled with MFS currents (hourly for drag, daily for currents)

10 MyOcean large scale numerical forecasting system
C) Pelagic Biochemistry (OGS) Horizontal res: 1/16°x1/16° ~ 6.5Km Vertical res: 72 unevenly spaced levels Offline Coupling with MFS physics 10 days forecast every three days Circulation Model OPA 1/16° Daily means INGV Biogeochemical Model OPATM-BFM 1/16° OGS CINECA Lazzari et al., 2010

11 The MFS deterministic forecast system
Forecast and analyses production cycle Tuesday Days Tuesday Tuesday Tue - Wed - Once a week, daily analyses are produced for the past 14 days (best satellite information and all in situ) Thu - Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon - Tue - Production Days Every day a deterministic forecast is issued starting either from analysis or a simulation Analysis 24hr Model Simulation + Assimilation 24hr Model Simulation 10 days physical Forecast

12 The MFS users: Limited area sub-basin, shelf scale models
