Eliminating Bullies in the Schools Herrell 14

More than 30% of children have been bullied in the schools 28 states have laws against bulling Bullying is: –Physical harm –Spreading bad rumors –Keeping certain people out of a group –Teasing people in a mean way –Gang up on others

Steps: –Do your homework –Increase students’ understanding of bullying –Explore the effects of bullying –Teach strategies for students to avoid bullying –Increase students’ understanding of bullies –Increase skills of bystanders to help stop bullying –Build a feeling of cohesion among students –Build schoolwide programs

Helping students who have been bullied; 1.Offer help privately 2.Spend time with the student 3.Praise the student for courage talking about the subject 4.Ask the student what he needs to feel safe 5.Communicate with colleagues 6.Do not force a meeting with the bully and the bullied 7.Plan next steps 8.Explore involving parents What to do, as an adult if you see bulling Immediately stop the bulling Refer to the behavior and the school rules Support the bullied student to save face Include the bystanders in the conversation Do not require students to meet and work things out Provide individual follow up Talk with bystanders privately Avoiding Bulling Insults to compliments Asking question Agreeing Golden nuggets Tone twisters
