The ESPON 2013 Programme Role in Structural Funds : – Support EU Cohesion Policy development with pan- European, comparable facts and evidence on Territorial Structures, Trends, Perspectives and Policy Impacts – Focus on European Regions and Cities, and revealing territorial capital, potentials and challenges. Budget : – 47 mill Euro (ERDF 34 mill. Euro, plus 13 mill. Including a European perspective Using ESPON in analyses for integrated regional strategies: –Openness for adding a European perspective –Benchmarking/learning the strategy area within numerous themes related to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth –Look for swot’s of (1) the entire area, (2) for particular regions and cities, (3) across borders and (4) in the wider context (neighbours and networks) –Inform the policy makers on the specific diversity of potentials and challenges –Be precise on where within the strategy area what smart specialisation could be implemented most efficient as actions –Propose a “balanced” strategy with mix of actions in different places that can support the policy momentum necessary
