PEOPLE ARE SOCIAL? MOST US DO THINGS BECAUSE OF THE INFLUENCE OF SOMEONE ELSE? WHO WAS YOUR INFLUENCE?

 Friend / Family  Boss / Co-Worker  Neighbor  Stranger  Or Did you seek Rotary Out? WHO BROUGHT YOU IN ?

WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOUR CLUB?

WHAT IS YOUR CLUB LIKE?  Small – Medium – Large  Young – Middle Aged – Senior  Fun – Exciting – Dynamic  Growing or Shrinking  Serving Your Community

LA JOLLA NEW GENERATIONS

LA JOLLA NEW GENERATIONS THE COGS

What Makes Rotary Attractive to Younger People?  Fellowship  Service  Flexibility with schedule  Fun Meetings  Low costs  Meeting established community members  Great Programs weekly

WHY A NEW GEN CLUB WORKS?  Filled a niche Central Location near employment centers Time - Evening  Teachers and others schedule can’t easily join a morning and noon club due to time commitments.  Many of our members interested in Rotary but couldn’t find a good fit for them

WHAT CAN A NEW GEN DO?  40 New Members 38 First Time Rotarians  18 Paul Harris Fellows  3 Paul Harris Society  $165/capita Foundation Giving

WHAT CAN A NEW GEN DO?  District 5340 Membership Growth  Rotary International Membership Extension Award  RI Presidential Citation Award

WHAT CAN A NEW GEN DO?

HOW DID WE DO IT?  Put out District-wide Info on New Club 6 months in advance  Started Monthly Meetings in December 2006 Held 2 Monthly Meetings District Leadership and sponsor clubs key!  Weekly in March 2007 / Chartered June Charter Members  Promoted Heavily at all District Events  Many members are referrals of other clubs and sons/daughters of a Rotary Family

HOW DID WE DO IT?  Had tremendous District Support in initial meetings and then promoting later.  Two involved sponsoring clubs Members were there throughout the initial process  Find a knowledgeable Rotarian to lead club  Make Rotary knowledge priority Can’t become a Rotarian unless you know about Rotary

CLUB FORMAT  Dues are $60 a month / $720 a year  $75 Membership Fee  Standard Rotary Meeting Format  Light appetizers and beverages  Flexible attendance for a few members. You are not going to get 100% from all!  Keep your meetings Fun and Fast Paced  Get “Service Above Self” going

KEEP NEW MEMBERS INVOLVED  Needed to keep new members engaged after joining  Discovered the Lucky 7 Club idea New members setup meeting Introduce Guests Do a Rotary Minute Do a Who Am I All qualifications for getting Blue Badge

WHAT WE LEARNED SO FAR  In our third year…..  Second Year we brought in 13 members!  We also lost 13 members!  Younger members are more mobile and not set in their careers, family or habits.  Lost members to education, job changes, move somewhere else, and not a Good Fit

WHAT WE RECOMMEND…..  Be thorough in your new member requirements Make sure they make multiple meetings Make sure you explain financial and attendance requirements Follow up on dues and missing meetings  Have plenty of service projects  Have plenty of fellowship activities  Educate your members about Rotary!!!!!

ROTARY CLUB ON THE WEB?  Does your club have a website? Is it someplace you go for info? Is your club newsletter found there? Can you find other club members contact info?  Does your Club everything?  Embrace technology and keep your club talking 7 days a week.

Aim for 20% - 50% Membership Increase in 12 months! It Doesn’t Get Much Easier Than This!

Process: 1.Establish a small committee within the club (2 members are sufficient) 2.Have a presentation given to the club by a District Chairman or AG etc 3.Collect names from each member - suggest they use their business card holders to gain names, talk to their partners 4.Correlate the names and circulate the list to the club for comment 5.Present list to Board, then to classification, then back to club with any amendments 6.Letter sent out to prospective members inviting them to a special 'interest' meeting 1.A follow-up telephone call by rostered members to confirm numbers for interest meeting catering. 1.At interest meeting, prospective members mix with others and have chance to ask questions 1.Further information available outside the meeting

Process (cont’d) 10.Prospective members at the interest meeting are told that they are 'special people' as they have met the requirements of RI and can join the normal meetings and see if Rotary is to their liking. No need to submit a card on the member as their names have already been circulated to club members. 11.Prospective members, prior to induction can now attend regular meetings 12.DG advised of outcome 13.Induction night (big festivities) with partners invited and made welcome (always include MOP in the induction kit) 14.Each new member is assigned a "mentor" to ensure that there is ongoing mentoring 15.For membership retention - (a) 'make meetings interesting' 16.For membership retention - (b) 'give every member a meaningful job

BE THE SPARK IN YOUR CLUB’S MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND RETENTION!!!
