ASHRAE’s Mission Advancing HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world

WHO WE ARE 52,000 volunteer members in over 130 countries ◦ More than 5,000 student members ◦ More than 170 chapters ◦ More than 250 student branches ◦ More than 7,500 young professional members Consulting engineers, contractors, manufacturers, manufacturing representatives, architects and students

OUR ORGANIZATION 28 standing committees ~130 standards and guidelines committees ~100 technical committees ~300 publications Six certification programs More than 100 educational courses Research ◦ 78 active projects ◦ Over 700 projects completed over last 50 years Advocacy in Washington, DC, and locally in US states

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT Global membership Our members create our technologies One of few HVAC&R organizations in world with own research program Recognized as the leader in the HVACR industry for technical advancements

ASHRAE and Existing Buildings Two recent Presidential themes have highlighted existing buildings ◦ Operation and maintenance (William Harrison, ‘08-’09) ◦ Energy conservation in existing buildings (Gordon Holness, ’09-’10) Standards and guidelines for existing building energy conservation and performance verification Certification of energy assessors Building energy labeling

STANDARDS FOR EXISTING BUILDINGS Standard 100, Energy Conservation in Existing Buildings, provides a means of classifying the energy efficiency of existing buildings or building complexes ASHRAE Guideline 14, Measurement of Energy and Demand Savings, provides guidelines for reliably measuring the energy and demand savings due to building energy management projects

Building Energy Labels Information on the potential and measured energy use of buildings Feedback to building owners and operators on how their building is performing Insight into the value and potential of investments for long-term energy costs Opportunity to differentiate buildings in a technically sound and consistent manner

Building Energy Assessment Professional Certify ability to audit and analyze residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, including: ◦ determining project scope ◦ collecting data ◦ analyzing building performance ◦ interpreting results ◦ evaluating alternatives ◦ recommending energy conservation measures ◦ assisting with ECM implementation ~75 certified in 6 months since start of program in Feb. 2011

HEADQUARTERS RENEWAL Demonstrate commitment to sustainability Deliver a healthy and productive workplace Provide a learning center Create a living lab

In 2005, ASHRAE formed a plan to renew its headquarters building in Atlanta. The project was completed in June 2008: ASHRAE succeeded in creating a healthy, productive and sustainable building, ensuring a sustainability showcase for years to come. – 34,000 ft 2 – Total cost of $7.6 million

A- in As Designed category of ASHRAE’s Building Energy Quotient program Recipient of ENERGY STAR® Awarded LEED® Platinum in New Construction in Version 2.2 BUILDING EXCELLENCE

ASHRAE Research Strategic Plan Eleven strategic goals chosen to address technical challenges that limit our ability to maximize building performance, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality while minimizing our impact on the environment.

Research Strategic Plan Goals Maximize the actual operational energy performance of buildings and facilities Support the development of ASHRAE energy standards and reduce effort required to demonstrate compliance Building Information Modeling (BIM) of energy efficient, high- performing buildings Support development of tools, procedures and methods suitable for designing low energy buildings Significantly increase the understanding of energy efficiency, environmental quality and the design of buildings in engineering and architectural education
