Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. Students in Mrs. Brown and Mr. Hemler’s classes were presented with the challenge of taking a position on whether or not students should go to school all year long. They were initially asked to come up with a pros and cons list.
Introduce the topic, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure that lists reasons. After creating a pros and cons list, students chose their best reasons to include in their writing
Provide reasons that support the opinion. Students then expanded on their reasons by including supporting details for each one.
FINAL PRODUCT Students created rough drafts, which were edited through conferencing with their peers and teachers. The result was a published product.
