Getting Started… Learning Goal: To learn how to create and present a small speech to the class in sixty seconds or more. Success Criteria: To successfully communicate your opinion and supporting reasons on a chosen topic. Instructions: Chose a topic from our class list: _____________________ Use the graphic organizer to develop your opinion and three supporting reasons. Rehearse and prepare your speech and share with others for peer feedback. Share your speech with the rest of the class!

Assignment Evaluation

Formative Feedback

INTRODUCTION / HOOK Your speech should begin with a ‘hook’ to grab the audience’s attention. You can start with something like a personal anecdote, a story, and/or a provocative question. This is your chance to intrigue your audience and tell us what you will be talking about! Mrs. C’s Exemplar: In my seven years of teaching, I have graded and evaluated approximately one thousand two hundred and sixty students at W.C.I. That’s five thousand and forty report cards, three thousand seven hundred and eighty sets of individual comments and one thousand two hundred and sixty final grades.

THESIS STATEMENT Now that you have introduced your topic, tell us your personal opinion (thesis statement). Mrs. C’s Exemplar: Numerical grades are arbitrary. A single number cannot effectively symbolize all that you have or have not achieved in a single course.

THREE SUPPORTING POINTS In order to support your personal opinion on your topic, provide the audience with three different supporting points to convince us that you have a strong argument. Mrs. C’s Exemplar: 1.It is impossible to fairly measure student achievement because every teacher is different. 2.Final grades reduce individual student learning to a single number. Numbers cannot truly measure ability or potential. 3.Numerical grades are an external motivator. True learning should come as a result of internal motivation for the pursuit of knowledge.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS / FINAL STATEMENT This is your chance to reiterate your thesis statement and provide the audience with a convincing final statement that will persuade them to agree with and/or respect your personal opinion. Mrs. C’s Exemplar: Learning is a lifelong pursuit, a daily challenge, and a constant quest for information. We are motivated to learn when we are interested, excited and intrigued by something new. We learn because we want to. In the real world, beyond all realms of academia, we are not awarded a gold star or an 83% when we demonstrate mastery of a new piece of knowledge. Numerical grades are an arbitrary, inaccurate and unfair measure of success.

Remember… You will be evaluated on the information you share (numerical grade). You will also be evaluated on the way in which you deliver your speech! (level grade). This assignment is designed to prepare you for the summative speech assignment at the end of this unit.
