How Do You Get Your ?(1) 은 SMTP(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) 을 이용해서 인터넷을 통해 전달됨 SMTP 는 application 과 메시지가 route 에 의해 지나가는 모든 컴퓨터들에 의해서 처리됨 Receiving Incoming Messages – 을 받고 읽는 방법은 사용자가 인터넷에 접속 하는 방법에 따라 다름 항상 인터넷에 접속해 있지 않다면 mail server 로부터 e- mail 을 download 받아야 함 항상 인터넷에 접속해 있다면 mail server 에 이 존재 하는 동안에는 읽을 수 있음

How Do You Get Your ?(2) –mail server 는 POP(Post Office Protocol) or POP3 를 이 용하여 mailbox 에 을 받고 저장 – 을 읽기 위해서는 application(mail client or POP client) 필요 Sending Outgoing Message – application 을 이용해서 메시지 작성 –SMTP server 으로 메시지 전송 –ISP 는 SMTP server 와 POP server 를 동시에 관리 Ways of Accessing –mail client(Eudora, Outlook), Web-based , commercial provider(CompuServe, America Online), LAN, UNIX program(Pine, Elm, Mutt)

Addressing(1) or domain name –username 에는 숫자, 밑줄, 마침표 등을 넣을 수 있지 만 쉼표, 빈칸, 괄호는 넣을 수 없음 –host or domain name 은 mailbox 의 위치 제공 address 에서 대문자는 보통 중요하지 않 음 address 는 구두점 ( 따옴표나 꺽쇠 괄호 등 ) 을 포함하지 않음 대부분의 program 은 address 주변 에 angle bracket(<>) 을 넣을 수 있게 함

Addressing(2) More About Host names –host name 은 최소한 2 개의 파트로 구성됨 –host name 은 2 개 이상의 파트로 구성됨 (computer name 을 맨 앞에 넣을 수 있음 ) – 대부분 computer name 을 뺸 address 도 가능 Special Addresses – 많은 domain 들은 사용자들이 정보를 얻을 수 있는 특별한 address 들을 제공함 –for instance, postmaster, info, webmaster and sysadmin

Addressing(3) Message Headers – 각각의 메시지는 그 메시지에 대한 정보를 담 은 header 로 시작됨 – 보통 package 에서는 자동으로 메시지 header 를 보여 주지 않음 – 각각의 header 는 type of header + colon + content of the header 로 이루어짐 –X 로 시작하는 header 는 optional header

Netiquette Think twice before sending an emotional message. Use the subject line well. Don’t flame. Check spelling and punctuation. Watch the sarcasm. Don’t send to people who don’t want it. Don’t overquote, especially on mailing lists. Don’t use all capitals or any other weird formatting. Sent that everyone can read. Don’t plagiarize. Don’t pretend you’re someone else. Don’t send frivolous messages. Remember the law. Don’t forward chain letter and other junk .

Signatures and Stationery Signature – 사용자의 이름이나, address 와 다른 정보들을 사용자가 보내는 의 뒤에 나타나게 하기 위해 서 많은 program 들은 outgoing message 의 뒤에 덧붙이는 파일인 signature 를 생성하도록 함 –signature 는 보통 네줄 정도가 적당 Stationery – 거의 변화가 없는 메시지를 보낼때 stationery( form letters) 를 이용 – 보통 program 들은 사용자가 자주 보내는 메시 지에 넣기를 원하는 header 와 text 로 이루어진 stationery file 을 저장하여 사용할 수 있게 함.

Attachments 파일을 보내는 사용자의 program 이 다른 타입의 파일을 text-like format 으로 바꿔서 Internet mail system 을 통해 전달 이 mail 을 받는 program 이 원래의 형태로 변환 MIME : newest and best standard method for sending attachments Uuencoding : 주로 UNIX program 에서 사 용됨 BinHex : 주로 Mac 에서 사용됨

Web-Based (1) 장점 –Web 에 access 할 수 있다면 자신의 컴퓨터 없이도 mail 을 확인할 수 있음 –free 단점 – 광고를 봐야 함 –security 가 보통의 메일보다 보장되지 못함 종류 –Messages sent to a Web-only account –Messages stored in your POP mailbox

Web-Based (2) Web-based service 를 선택할 때 고려해야 할 점 –Does it handle attachments? –Is it free? –Has it been in business long? –Does it provide the features you need? –How much space does it give you? –Does it support formatted messages? –Is it easy to use? –How fast is it?
