What you will learn In this power point I’m hoping to teach you the basics of music. Some of the things we will be talking about are: Clefs Rhythm Note names Also looking at an orchestra concert and what a French Horn sounds like

Rhythm One of the fundamentals of music is rhythm. Rhythm tell a instrumentalist how long to play a note with the rest of the band. Some basic note rhythms are: Whole Note Half Note Quarter Note Eighth Note Sixteenth Note

How to count rhythms In 4/4 time… For a whole note clap on one then hold the clap for the remaining 3 counts 1 2 3 4 For a whole note clap on one hold on two, clap on three then hold on four 1 2 3 4 For a quarter note you will clap on each beat. 1 2 3 4 For an eighth note you will divide the quarter note in half so two eighth equals One quarter note. To count this you say: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Clefs This is called a treble clef. These notes are higher sounding and are played by instruments like Clarinet, flute, Saxophone, Trumpet and French Horn. This is called bass clef. These notes are lower sounding and are played by instruments like the Euphonium, Tuba, Trombone, and any other bass instrument. This is what the clefs look together on piano music. most of the time the treble clef is on the top and bass clef is on the bottom.

How to read Notes Music notes are composed on what is known as a staff. A staff has five lines and four spaces. Music Staff These are the notes names in treble clef that correspond with the appropriate note on the staff. Once you get use to reading notes you can create acronyms to help you remember the order. Instruments There are many different instruments that help produce music. These instruments can be broken down into categories: Brass Instruments Woodwind Instruments Strings Percussion

Brass Family Brass Instruments make a sound by buzzing into the mouthpiece and using their lips and valves to help them find the pitches Instruments in this family are: Trumpet French Horn Trombone Euphonium Tuba

Woodwind Family Woodwinds use Reeds that vibrates against the mouthpiece when they blow into the instrument. Woodwind instruments have lots of keys so they usually play fast, quick notes Instruments in this family are: Flute Clarinet Saxophone Oboe Bassoon

String Instruments These instruments use a bow and strings to produce the sound. The bow goes back and forth over a particular string.

Percussion These instruments are played by striking an object. The object can either produce a particular note or a sound.
