Orchestral Seating Chart ► The symphony orchestra is composed of three groups: Strings, Winds and Percussion ► The String section consists of basses, cellos, violas and violins. ► The Wind section consists of the woodwinds (the blue) and brass (maroon and pink section. ► The Percussion section is the purple section and also includes the piano and harp.

Woodwind Family ► The Woodwind family is broken up into single reeds and double reeds. ► It can be broken up in the four basic voice types. ► Soprano- piccolo, flute, oboe (DR), and clarinet (SR). ► Alto- alto saxophone (SR), and English horn (DR). ► Tenor- tenor saxophone (SR), and bassoon (DR). ► Bass- bassoon (DR), baritone saxophone (SR), and bass clarinet (SR).

Brass Family ► The Brass instruments are made of metal. ► 1. The soprano consists of trumpet and flugelhorn. ► 2. The alto consists of the French horn. ► 3. The tenor consists of the tenor trombone and the euphonium (tenor tuba). ► The bass voice of the brass is the tuba and bass trombone.

The Strings Family ► The String family is divided the same way as the other instruments. ► The soprano voice is the Violin. ► The alto voice is the viola. ► The tenor voice is the Violincello (cello. ► The bass voice is the Double bass. ► Bigger= lower Smaller= higher

Percussion ► The Percussion Family is no limited to what is seen here, but these are the orchestra and band basics. ► Anything that can be struck or dropped to create a sound can be put into percussion. ► There are more keyboard Instruments in the percussion than glockenspiel and xylophone. ► The percussion section is extremely important to keeping the ensemble together because they keep the pulse.

Keyboard Family ► The Keyboard family is made up of mainly four instruments and they are from left to right: Harpsichord, Organ, Piano, and Digital Key Board. ► The harpsichord and organ were used heavily during the Baroque period. The harpsichord’s strings are plucked to produce a sound, but the organ’s different stops are pulled causing air to pass through different pipes. ► The piano was invented in the very early Classical period and uses hammers to produce sound. It was originally called the pianoforte because of it’s sensivity to dynamics. ► The digital keyboard was invented in the 20 th century and it reproduces digitally recorded sounds when it is played.
