Typography Definition: The study of type and its characteristics Type does many things – Conveys the message – Creates visual interest – Sets the tone

Typeface and Fonts Typeface is a design for a set of characters (letters, numbers and punctuation marks) Typeface is NOT the same as font Font is a specific typeface combined with variations such as size, style and spacing

Typeface Typography Serif Ascender Descender Cap height x-height

Categorizing Typeface Serif – a small cross-stroke at the top and bottom of most letters Sans serif – sans means without so a sans serif font means without cross-strokes Scalable fonts– displaying a font in any size without any distortion of the typeface Points – measuring fonts in points. A point is 1/72 of an inch.
