pay roll giving by surat sandhu 22 August 2014

Why individual fundraising? Payroll giving-What, Why? Why it makes sense for companies and NGOs Simple steps to start payroll giving Share experience thus far Getting you to your Potential

We are sure Every organization wants to raise more and spend less to do it Every organization can raise more by being more strategic Most people in THIS room are already using reasonably effective techniques

Individuals/Corporates- $ 1.5 Billion FCRA- $ 4 Billion Government- $ 5 Billion Which is the most important ???

Individuals/Corporates- $ 1.5 Billion* FCRA- $ 4 Billion Government- $ 5 Billion *Potential $ 15 Billion plus

Why is individual FR important?  Who has the money?  Credibility-of organisation  Respect-of organisation  Independence  Sustainability  Unrestricted Funds

Why Poor Fundraising  People do not know us  Are we sure we know what we need  What do we tell prospects  We do not know WHO, HOW & HOW MUCH to ask?  No Fundraisers  No Investment  Over dependent on International Agencies

In all this potential Are you getting your market share If NOT whose fault is it? The donors or yours?

And Funds

Where are these individuals Houses Markets Everywhere But where concentrated and as a group –In any office –In any corporate –Factory etc

Payroll giving is an effective and efficient method by which employees can voluntarily make small but regular donations from their salary to a cause (of their choice) What is payroll giving

simply put A voluntary donation programme Implemented by NGOs/companies for their employees Can be as part of a company’s corporate social responsibility Employees can contribute a small amount every month. Which gets deducted from their salary (hence ‘payroll’) And goes to a specific cause/ your NGO

and The employee fills in a sign up form Employee specifies the NGO Payroll dept deducts the amount every month Passes on the amount to your/specified NGO Usually the commitment is for an agreed duration

Sample sign up form Name: Employee ID: Monthly Contribution (Rs): Duration (Months): Address: Signature:

Rs 100 a month through a Payroll Giving programme Eg. $ 6000 per year = appropriate clothing and footwear for school for 60 disadvantaged young students Would you miss the $ 5 *Based on average month of 4.2 weeks $ 5 per month $ 60 per year $ 60 x 100 staff = $ 6000 per year

Giving Calculator – An example If an employee chooses to donate $ 5, $ 10 or $ 25 a month from their salary Equivalent of Donation Reduced take home pay Annual cost to the employee Annual contribution to community A Coffee + $ 5 $ 60 Lunch +$ 10 $ 120 Dinner for Two $ 25 $ 300

Provides regular and often, general income Long donor life –Donors tend to continue giving for a long time, unless they change jobs etc –Low cost per donor acquired –By signing on one company, you sign on several individual donors. Why payroll giving

Why PRG Ability to attract new donors –Existing donors will often motivate their peers to give. –Helps create a database Easy to implement –Establish a pattern and run with it every month. Source of regular funds

Business Benefits Business benefits Enhance reputation and profile Strengthen our community links Enhance staff recruitment and retention Boost staff morale Implemented at a low cost Enhance existing community involvement Contribute to our culture

Staff Benefits Staff benefits Support causes we care about Get involved easily Contribute even when busy Boost morale – ‘feel good’ factor Tax deduction Avoid collecting receipts

$1.7 $850 $1020 India UK USA Donations per capita each year There is enormous potential for growth in India Workplace giving has significant potential in Asia Increases the possibility of Payroll Giving

Don’t Forget “What's in it for the corporate” Think about why the company should associate with you

Challenges it’s mostly a CEO decision restricting choice of causes/NGOs access to employees need for an automated, online system hassles- –managing employee changes –unknown NGO brands could have a start up problem

Start in your own organisation –Get staff in your own organisation to voluntarily contribute. Then look to establish payroll giving in other organisations and companies. Identify company –personal contacts, directories, magazines, websites, media, PR agencies, local/ regional companies Simple steps to start PRG

The Case “The case is an expression of the cause, or a clear, compelling statement of all of the reasons why anyone should consider making a contribution in support of or to advance our work.”

Simple steps Get management support –Management creates enthusiasm among employees. –The company could even make a matching donation! Winning over staff –Form a working committee –These are people within the company who will work with you/help to implement the programme. Don’t forget union leaders, etc –Presentations at work place/canteen

Tell a story

Have a script/presentation ready that: –captures the staff’s attention –highlights your organisation’s achievements –build credibility –Suggest options for partnership/PRG

Philanthropy/Giving is the Mystical Mingling of: ‘An artful asker’ ‘A joyous giver’, & ‘A grateful recipient!’

Establish accounting and auditing procedures –Decide with the finance department methods to ensure monthly deductions from salaries, and agree what reports and materials you will provide to employees. –Intra News letter Determine campaign approach –Make a list of things to do and allocate responsibility for every activity – distributing fliers, putting up posters, and making presentations to groups of employees. Simple steps to start PRG

Simple steps Follow up –Say thank you, send individuals your annual report through the company, encourage employees to visit your work, get your organisation featured in their newsletter. Measure and report results –Evaluate periodically and discuss ways to improve.

Involvement Scholarships Make it interesting Staff team building exercises Social tourism Donate and sell a skill Cricket, other matches

MASTER LIST OF EMPLOYEES NameEmp.IDDesig.Dept.Branch Locati on ID A sample employee master-list

How? Out source-Give India, CAF etc DIY-HelpAge India

CAF experience Give As You Earn (GAYE)

HelpAge India Oldest PRG program started in India 1996 Raises about a $ 3,00,000 Most of the supporters are blue collar workers

POSSIBILITIES If just 2,000 of the corporate workforce Donated $ 5 a month through workplace giving, an extra $ 10,000 per month would be raised by your NGO

While you get to know something good n beautiful, the first thing you should do is to share it with your friends. So that knowledge will spread and get applied everywhere. I think I just did Thank You surat
