 Why is it important to understand the background and life of a poet when analyzing poetry?

 Do Now  How to annotate a poem: 1 Guided and 1 in pairs  Reminder of poetry guidelines/What will you be required to research today?  Computer Lab (Time to begin)

 The Worship of Nature by John Greenleaf Whittier  The harp at Nature's advent strung Has never ceased to play; The song the stars of morning sung Has never died away. And prayer is made, and praise is given, By all things near and far; The ocean looketh up to heaven, And mirrors every star. Its waves are kneeling on the strand, As kneels the human knee, Their white locks bowing to the sand, The priesthood of the sea! They pour their glittering treasures forth, Their gifts of pearl they bring, And all the listening hills of earth Take up the song they sing. The green earth sends its incense up From many a mountain shrine; From folded leaf and dewy cup She pours her sacred wine.

 Imagine you are members of the Union. The Civil War has just ended and the Northerners have won. This means freedom for slaves and preservation of the Union. How do you feel? If you were members of the Union how would you feel about Lincoln’s death? (1/2 page to a page-silent and independent work on a SEPARATE piece of paper).

 You will work in rows.  1. In groups re-read poem, “O Captain! My Captain!”.  2. Use the poem and discussion to answer the following questions. (Hint: Think about Lincoln and the Civil War).  ANSWER:  1. What is the poem actually about?  2. What metaphors can you find?  3. What associations (what do you think of) can you make with the word “captain”? Who is the poet referring to?  4. How does the poet feel about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War?  5. Fill out your noun chart completely

 Think about a person either you know or someone famous who has passed away and you want to write an elegy for. Think critically about this person. What metaphors would you use to describe them? Select one of your metaphors to develop into an extended metaphor. Example: Whitman used nautical metaphors throughout his poem.  Homework! (5mins to pick a person and come up with a metaphor) DUE 3/12-3/13
